The M40i packs significantly more power and despite only having RWD, it gets to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155 mph in both cases.

Engine and Transmission

The engine of the BMW Z4 Roadster sDrive30i is a 2.0L turbocharged inline four-cylinder with 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, while the M40i's engine is a 3.0L turbocharged inline six-cylinder with 382 hp and 368 lb-ft. These aren't the only differences, as the M40i also comes standard with the Dynamic Handling package, which adds an M Sport differential to its drivetrain. This package is optional on the sDrive30i. Both trims use the same ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, with no manual gearbox or all-wheel drive available.

2023 Z4 Roadster Gas Mileage

In terms of gas mileage, the BMW Z4 Roadster's mpg figures are very good in this class, with the four-cylinder powertrain of the sDrive30i managing EPA estimates of 25/33/28 mpg on the city/highway/combined cycles. The six-cylinder M40i is only slightly worse at 23/31/26 mpg. To put the figures into perspective, both derivatives handsomely beat the base 2.0 turbocharged 718 Boxster's combined 24 mpg. With a fuel capacity of 13.7 gallons, the sDrive30i has an expected range of 384 miles on the combined cycle, while the M40i should be able to get around 356 miles from a tank.
