The base 137-hp 1.2-liter engine is weak, but even with the upgraded 155-hp 1.3-liter engine, the Buick Encore's 0-60 sprint takes an agonizingly long 9.2-9.5 seconds, according to independent tests. Still, this is a lot slower than most of its competitors. Top speed is unimportant in a practical small crossover like this, and Buick doesn't quote a figure. The Encore GX is unlikely to reach the 130 mph it takes to test the limits of the all-season tires. The larger engine's torque delivery feels adequate around town, and the CVT is smooth and unobtrusive, but the nine-speed automatic that comes with the AWD setup can be a bit dimwitted and slow to change down. Trailering is provided for, but this being a lightweight crossover, the maximum you can tow is 1,000 pounds with the factory tow hitch fitted. AWD is an option, but with a ground clearance of 7.5 inches and now dual-range transmission, you'll be limited to the odd dirt road, with no off-road antics on the cards.
The base engine in the Buick Encore GX is a 1.2L turbocharged three-cylinder with 137 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, and it's only available with front-wheel drive in the Preferred trim. The upgraded engine on this trim - which is the standard engine on the ST and Avenir - is a 1.3L turbocharged three-cylinder with 155 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque. When fitted with FWD, the default transmission on either engine is a CVT automatic. All-wheel drive is optionally available on all three trims, but only in conjunction with the larger engine and a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Considering its tiny engines and low power outputs, one would expect exceptional gas mileage from the Buick Encore, but its mpg figures are quite disappointing. Thriftiest by the slightest of margins is the base 1.2-liter powertrain with FWD, which returns an EPA-estimated 30/31/30 mpg on the city/highway/combined cycles, followed closely by the 1.3-liter FWD with 29/31/30 mpg. Equipping AWD puts quite a dent in these figures - 26/28/27 mpg. The Encore GX is easily beaten by a Hyundai Kona, which returns 32 mpg combined in either of its configurations. With a fuel capacity of 13.2 gallons, the FWD Encore GX has a range of around 396 miles, and the AWD models, 356 miles.

The base 1.2-liter powertrain with FWD is the most efficient with EPA figures of 30/31/30 mpg city/highway/combined.
Both engines will happily run on Regular gas.
