The interior of the Buick Encore GX tries to give you something between the mainstream Nissan Kicks and the premium BMW X1, and it mostly succeeds with a tasteful presentation and a near-premium air on the Avenir. Some cheaper materials and a few brittle plastics in the second row betray its Chevy roots, and assembly quality is not up to the standard of the Europeans, but it's decent enough inside. The front of the cabin makes more liberal use of soft-touch plastics. The dashboard is redesigned this year to accommodate the new Buick Virtual Cockpit System - an eight-inch digital gauge cluster and 11-inch touchscreen housed under a shared panel. The setup significantly modernizes the interior and looks smart. Space has always been an Encore GX strong suit, and it still has one of the roomiest cabins in this segment. You have a good view all round from the commanding driving position.
The seats of the Buick Encore GX draw no complaints, and the generally good seating comfort is aided by competitive interior space, fore, and aft. Front-seat space is abundant, with 39.7 inches of headroom and 40.9 inches of legroom, but even the second row is generous for this class, with these two measurements reading 38.1 and 36 inches, respectively - on par with slightly larger rivals such as the CX-30 and roomier than a Kona.

The interior colors of the Buick Encore GX are the exact same for every trim level: Ebony or Whisper Beige. Only the upholstery type differs and in the Preferred, this is a cloth/leatherette combination, while the ST gets leatherette and the Avenir real leather. The Avenir has an Avenir quilt pattern on the seatbacks and the Avenir logo embroidered on the front headrests. The ST is the only trim to get a flat-bottomed steering wheel.
The Buick Encore GX's trunk space is very good, and the 23.5 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row beats most of its rivals except for the capacious Taos - and it has a standard cargo cover. Folding down the 60/40-split rear seat expands the trunk volume to 50.2 cu-ft. The Avenir's electrically operated front-passenger seat can be folded flat to load long items. A collapsible cargo-area organizer to hold lightweight items like groceries secure is optionally available. Interior storage is well catered for, with a traditional glovebox, deep front and rear door pockets, a lidded and open center-console compartment, two front cupholders alongside the gear shifter, and a place to store your phone ahead of that. Only the Avenir gets front seatback pockets, and in a disappointing suggestion of cost-cutting, this is the only trim to get a center rear armrest with cupholders; this item is optional on the other two trims.
The Preferred is well-equipped out of the box, and although it comes with cloth/leatherette upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, and single-zone climate control, it does have features such as keyless access and start, a manually tilting/telescoping steering column, cruise control, active noise-canceling, an eight-inch digital gauge cluster, and the full Buick Driver Confidence driver-assist package, complete with forward-collision warning, automatic braking with pedestrian detection, and lane-keep assist. Higher trims give you heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, leatherette or leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and more.
The infotainment system gains a big 11-inch touchscreen this year that sits behind a long panel shared with the adjacent eight-inch digital gauge cluster. The system is Wi-Fi capable and comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, two USB ports, Bluetooth audio streaming, voice commands, and a six-speaker audio system. Also standard are SiriusXM Platinum with a three-month trial subscription and a three-year subscription to OnStar Remote Access, which allows you to access vehicle functions, lock and unlock the vehicle, start or stop the engine, and more. The Avenir adds three years of OnStar Premium Plan, which adds the OnStar Guardian app, in-vehicle apps, and Wi-Fi hotspot data. The top two trims are eligible for a premium seven-speaker Bose audio system.
The Encore GX's trunk holds 23.5 cu-ft with the second row in use and 50.2 cu-ft with it folded down.
The Preferred and ST have only two front cupholders, and the rear center armrest containing another two cupholders is standard on the Avenir only and optional on the others.
