2021 Cadillac Escalade ESV Review: An Ever-Present Premier

Coming into 2021, the Cadillac Escalade ESV's fifth-generation guise is highlighted by fresh exterior design cues, an enhanced cabin, and upgraded underpinnings. Its acclaimed authoritative presence is retained but it now boasts even more room on the inside for its privileged occupants. The same 420-horsepower, gas-guzzling 6.2-liter V8 is found under the hulking hood of the new Escalade, but it can now be swapped out for a 277-hp Duramax turbodiesel engine that's less powerful but a lot more frugal. Regardless of which is in play, the Escalade ESV is still as compliant, competent, and comfortable as ever. But when it comes to advanced infotainment, driver assists, and comfort features, Caddy has stepped up its game to deliver the most lavish high-rider it can and improve upon reliability, which has always been a sore point for the brand . The BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class SUV, and the Lincoln Navigator L are all very compelling luxury cruisers, but none have quite the same presence as the premier of super-size luxury.

Engine and Transmission

For 2021, the Escalade ESV SUV is once again proffered with the familiar 6.2-liter 8-cylinder powertrain that, together with a 10-speed automatic transmission, shunts 420 hp and 460 lb-ft to either a rear- or all-wheel drivetrain. Cadillac also offers a 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V6 unit for the Escalade ESV SUV that's been modulated for outputs of up to 277 hp and 460 lb-ft. Performance is better with the naturally aspirated V8, which offers stronger acceleration responses and quicker sprint, but the turbo-diesel delivers better low-down grunt and improved economy. Whatever the case, the 10-speed auto proves to be an apt fit for the full-size SUV, delivering smooth, quick, and intuitive shifts that make for relaxed driving at any speed. With the standard V8, the ESV is accorded an 8,100-pound towing capacity while the Duramax tops out at 7,900-lbs.

Verdict: ๐ŸIs the 2021 Cadillac Escalade ESV a good SUV?

The Cadillac Escalade ESV is a lot more than just a proclamation of one's status or an enormous fashion statement, it's also a really cool-looking, level-headed, and pragmatic luxury vehicle. Coming into 2021, the now fifth-generation Caddy Escalade ESV retains its commanding presence and contemporary design but augments its appeal with a much higher-quality cabin, new technologies, and the addition of an upgraded suspension kit. The ultra-luxurious interior perfectly complements the velvety smooth ride, and the long list of standard creature comforts and infotainment features means that any trip feels like a pampered getaway. Yes, it's tough to drive because of its size and heft, and yes it's expensive - both GMC and Chevrolet offer alternatives that bear a lot more value - but there is no car quite like the Escalade. The NHTSA's review of the 2021 Cadillac Escalade ESV earned it a mediocre safety rating as it didn't do too well in the roll-over evaluation. Nevertheless, the Escalade ESV SUV is a special car that is bound to impress with its commanding presence and immense practicality.

๐Ÿš—What Cadillac Escalade ESV Model Should I Buy?

With a starting price of $76,195, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade ESV is an expensive 5-door vehicle as is, but it comes standard-fit with a pretty comprehensive array of creature comforts, conveniences, and safety features, so you get a lot from right off the bat. From there, moving up the model line essentially just sees the addition of more and more luxury items. When it comes to the powertrain, however, we'd certainly go for the more powerful 6.2-liter V8 engine for the vastly greater power outlay, and select the AWD system for the added traction. If we had to recommend a specification we'd suggest the Premium Luxury model, which comes outfitted with a full-color head-up display, a panoramic sunroof, and a good selection of driver assists, such as rear cross-traffic alert, lane change alert, blind-zone alert, lane change assist, and enhanced auto parking assist.
