2024 Cadillac XT4 First Look Review: Closer To Premium

With all eyes on the Lyriq, Cadillac has kept momentum by giving the littlest SUV in its stable a much-needed upgrade. Last given some TLC in 2022 with package updates, the Cadillac XT4 has finally come in for a more substantial aesthetic overhaul for the 2024 model year while building on that foundation. Drawing inspiration from the futuristic Lyriq, the XT4 gets a much more attractive exterior and gains a smarter interior, while everything else stays much the same. Whether that's enough to keep up against rivals like the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3, which have historically balanced fun driving characteristics with a premium feel, is still up in the air. How much of an improvement is there for the new Cadillac XT4 crossover?

When Is The 2024 Cadillac XT4 Coming Out?

As far as a release date for the 2024 Cadillac XT4 goes, the automaker has only stated that the compact crossover will go on sale in the USA this summer.

2024 Cadillac XT4 Price And Competition

The price of the 2024 Cadillact XT4 has not yet been made public, but it's safe to assume an increase over the cost of the current model. The base 2023 Luxury trim has an MSRP of $36,295, while the Premium Luxury asks for $40,195. The Sport is priced at $40,795, and all of these can be equipped with AWD for an extra $2,500. This pricing structure is likely to carry over for 2024, but given all the upgrades and new tech, expect to start nearer to $38,000 with the entry-level trim.

German competitors to the 2024 XT4 are already closer the $40k mark, with the 2023 BMW X1 starting at $39,100 before options, while Audi's Q3 goes for just $100 more than that in base specification. The XT4 has always been a less pricey option, but that can be counterproductive when you're trying to fit into the luxury designation and coming off a little too cheap. Still, we don't think Caddy will price it's compact offering quite as high.

New Cadillac XT4 Exterior And Colors

The exterior of the new Cadillac XT4 gets a swathe of updates, including brand-new grille designs and updated LED headlights. Vertical lighting cues are housed in a whole new front fascia. The signature lighting integrates DRLs with the headlamps, while the grille reimagines the way the Cadillac chevron is mounted. Said grille is rendered in deep gloss black on the base model, but Premium Luxury and Sport trims get their own unique versions. The wheels, fascias, roof rails, and side body accents differ on the upper trims, with Sport models getting dark accents and roof rails.

A power liftgate is standard and is hands-free from the mid-range models. A power sunroof will likely be available to all trims. Cadillac also says that there is an entirely new lineup of wheels, ranging in size from 18 to 20 inches, with entry-level trims using the smaller size. As far as exterior colors go, the Cadillac XT4 will probably keep the same basic shades, such as Argent silver and the added-cost Wave, Latte, and Rosewood. Three new hues are introduced for 2024, and while we know they'll cost you extra, we're not sure how much yet. New metallic exterior colors for the XT4 are Emerald Lake, Midnight Sky, and Deep Sea.

Cadillac XT4 Dimensions

Despite the exterior refresh, dimensions for the Cadillac XT4 are mostly carried over from the outgoing model. The 109.4-inch wheelbase, 181.1-inch length, and 83.5-inch width, including mirrors, are the same as the 2023 model, while the height of 63.2 inches without the roof rails (Luxury) and 64.1 inches with them (other trims) remains the same. Ground clearance is still 6.7 inches, and even curb weights are more or less the same. Base models weigh in at 3,660 pounds, but this is likely to increase to around 3,710 lbs in Sport guise, with around 190 pounds added if the AWD setup is opted on.

Cadillact XT4 Engine And Performance

What doesn't change for 2024 is what's under the hood, and the Cadillac XT4's engine is the same unit we're used to seeing here. It's a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four with 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic. Independent tests peg the 0-60 time somewhere in the mid-seven-second range, which is significantly slower than the X1 and more than half a second behind the Q3. This is understandable for the BMW compact crossover, given its specs are more impressive, at 241 hp. The Q3 is still quicker but it makes only 228 hp.

That said, however, the XT4's powertrain is known for being smooth with linear power delivery that pairs very well to the auto 'box. Theres virtually no turbo lag, and it is punchy and generally responsive. It's not the best for those who want some excitement in their crossover, but it's an excellent urban cruiser that does exceptionally well on the highway. It will be available in FWD or AWD, as it always has been.

Gas Mileage

The small-capacity turbocharged motor makes use of cylinder-deactivation tech and stop/start technology to maximize fuel efficiency, and while it does tick the box for not breaking the fuel budget, it's not necessarily a leader in the class. The EPA estimates the FWD variant will manage 23/30/26 mpg on city/highway/combined cycles, with the AWD dropping to 22/29/24 mpg. Audi's Q3 is less efficient in AWD guise, but the BMW X1 fares substantially better, with AWD figures of 25/34/28 mpg beating even the Caddy's FWD setup.

FWD cars get a 15.9-gallon fuel tank, while AWD models get 16.3 gallons of fuel capacity. This means a maximum range of around 410 miles with FWD or 390 miles if you want the AWD version of the XT4.

Cadillac XT4 Interior And Cargo

The interior of the Cadillac XT4 gets a noticeable improvement for 2024 that brings it closer to the premiumness the brand is chasing with the likes of the Lyriq. Inside, the XT4 still seats five and provides sufficient space to make most journeys comfortable, but the cockpit is where the most work has been done. The design is much fresher and centers on a 33-inch display with 9K resolution that does duty in the Lyriq, too. The upgrade over the old eight-inch unit is massive and is class-leading for its sheer size alone. And it comes equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Google built-in, and Amazon Alexa. A new 13-speaker AKG Studio sound system is available optionally across the range.

There are also new interior colors and trim options for 2024, with authentic wood, aluminum and carbon fiber listed as some of the choices available depending on the trim level. All of this sees the interior feel of the XT4 lifted to being more in line with competitors that feel like a step up in terms of elegance, luxury, and even build quality.

To add to the roster of improvements, Cadillac has expanded the standard features list and the Smart System is equipped across the range. Blind-zone steering assist, rear cross-traffic braking, front pedestrian and cyclist braking, and lane-keep assist with lane-departure warning are all standard items, and more are made available through the Active Safety Package on the top two trims. The updated list of tech on these packages now includes intersection automatic emergency braking, speed-limit assist, and traffic-sign recognition. Cargo space in the Caddy XT4 doesn't change for 2024, so behind the second row, you get 22.5 cubic feet of trunk space. Folding the back seats down opens up 48.9 cubes.
