2023 Cadillac XT5 Review: Waiting In The Wings
A redesigned new Cadillac XT5 compact luxury crossover is expected next year, as the current model was first introduced in the USA in 2016 as a 2017 model, and it's now really starting to show its age. This is a cut-throat segment awash with talent, and the XT5 has always faced an uphill battle against rivals such as the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. It does have a roomy cabin thanks to a larger body sitting on the same C1XX platform as the one-size-up XT6, which positions it between the compact and mid-size segments, inviting comparisons with larger cars such as the Lexus RX. But the years have not been kind to the XT5, and it has slid down to the bottom of the class, ably assisted by too many cheap cabin plastics, a forgettable driving experience, and underwhelming engines, even though the available 235- and 310-horsepower options look good on paper. The NHTSA's safety review of the Cadillac XT5 is still right up there among the best, and it has space and comfort going for it, but that's unlikely to be enough to give the mostly unchanged 2023 model much of a fighting chance.
What's the Price of the 2023 Cadillac XT5?
The price of a new Cadillac XT5 starts at $44,195, and that's for the base Luxury trim. This is followed by the Premium Luxury at $49,995 and the Sport at $57,095. These apply to the base configurations of each trim, which is to say with the 235-hp 2.0-liter engine and FWD in the case of the Luxury and Premium Luxury. Upgrading these two trims to AWD will cost an additional $2,000. The Premium Luxury is also eligible for the 310-hp 3.6-liter V6 engine for an additional $1,000. The Sport comes in one configuration only - V6 AWD. These prices for the Cadillac XT5 are MSRP and don't include the $1,395 destination charge.

2023 Cadillac XT5 Handling and Driving Impressions
The XT5 doesn't drive badly, but it simply doesn't have the bandwidth of more modern rivals. Ride quality is excellent on the lower two trims, and it will tackle corners stably with good composure and moderate roll but little verve, and not because it wants to entertain the driver. You can certainly do worse in this class, but the XT5's driving experience ranks near the forgettable middle of the segment, and it feels old next to the dynamics offered by an X3 or Q5, with little steering feedback, though it's well-weighted and precise. The Sport takes the sporty intent a touch too far, and its ride is too jittery on its big wheels, despite the adaptive suspension, while still not transforming the car into a fun-loving driving companion. In short, it's time for an update because the current XT5 fails to leave a lasting impression. The uncharismatic four-cylinder has good mid-range torque and gets on with the job, but the V6 can be a bit strident when pressed, although it's noticeably quicker.

Verdict: Is The 2023 Cadillac XT5 A Good SUV?
The Cadillac XT5 isn't competitive in the segment anymore, and while it does a passable job as a comfortable compact crossover in isolation, its rivals show how the world has moved on. The finishes are too cheap, and the driving experience too dull to justify its premium positioning or price, even if it's comfortable and roomy enough. It might still make sense if you can get a good deal, but almost every rival we can think of does a better job. We cannot recommend the current XT5 and would rather opt for a rival or wait and see what Cadillac comes up with for the new one.
What 2023 Cadillac XT5 Model Should I Buy?
The mid-range Premium Luxury trim is the one to have. It ups the luxury to a more appropriate level than the base car and substantially upgrades the specification sheet by adding leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, navigation, a sunroof, a hands-free liftgate, a premium audio system, and additional driver assists. We'd stick with FWD to keep the price in check, but the V6 engine is a worthwhile upgrade at only $1,000. The Sport is too expensive, doesn't ride with the suppleness expected of a Cadillac, and cannot be had in FWD.
