With a total of four engines to choose from, the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 LTD can perform as well as you need it to. Both rear- and four-wheel drive are readily available, so versatility is a key trait. The lowest outputs come from the turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but even the low-displacement unit can churn out a healthy 310 hp and 348 lb-ft of torque. This means it has no trouble moving the hulking pickup, though its lack of availability on upper trim levels might imply it can't handle too much extra weight. Nevertheless, it gets the pickup from 0 to 60 mph in around seven seconds. There are two V8 options if you need more power, a 5.3-liter and a 6.2-liter, with the latter sending a healthy 420 hp and 460 lb-ft down to the pavement. With all that power on tap, the Silverado accelerates to 60 mph in a brisk 5.4 seconds. If all you care about is low-down grunt, then the Duramax turbo-diesel will give you the same amount of torque but only 277 hp. Of course, people don't buy a Silverado to drag race - they use it for good old-fashioned hard work.
The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTD's towing capacity maxes out13,300 lbs. It's not the best, with the Ford F-150 able to tow 14,000 lbs. As for payload capacity, the Chevy can handle 2,431 lbs in its most capable guise.
There are fewer engines on the cards for 2022, but the Silverado still gets a healthy choice of four. The base unit is the 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-four, which is available on the lower trims. This engine puts out a hearty 310 hp and 348 lb-ft of torque. It comes paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The same 'box is used with the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8, which is available to almost every trim in the lineup. This naturally aspirated engine thrums with 355 hp and 383 lb-ft and can be paired with either an 8-speed or ten-speed auto transmission. The 3.0-liter inline-six Duramax turbo-diesel is not available to the lower trims, but every model from the LT up can choose to slot it under the hood. Paired with the ten-speed auto exclusively, this fuel-efficient engine (by pickup standards), develops just 277 hp but it matches the strongest engine's 460 lb-ft of torque. Speaking of strong engines, the 6.2-liter V8 is only compatible with the four-wheel drivetrain and ten-speed auto, and it is reserved for the more expensive trim levels. But, if you want access to its mighty 420 hp and 460 lb-ft, you'll have to cough up the dough.
However, you don't need all that power to motivate the Chevy pickup, as even the base engine does a good job of hustling it around town. The only reason you'll feel compelled to upgrade to one of the V8s is if you really want to slingshot around slower cars on the highway or haul gargantuan loads around on a regular basis. We are definitely glad Chevrolet dropped the six-speed automatic gearbox in favor of the eight- and ten-speed units. They are both significantly easier to live with, though perhaps not as smooth and refined as you'd find in an F-150 or Ram 1500.

Big, heavy trucks are not very light sippers when it comes to fuel economy, but Chevrolet does give buyers the option of a turbo-diesel engine if that is a serious concern. It's worth mentioning that the EPA doesn't specify LTD-specific gas mileage figures, but since this truck is essentially the same as the 2021 Silverado 1500, efficiency should be identical.
The base 2.7-liter turbo-four is quite frugal thanks to the turbocharging, returning 20/23/21 mpg across the city/highway/combined cycles, or 19/22/20 mpg with 4WD. The V8s are atrociously thirsty, though. The 5.3L manages a best of 17/23/19 mpg with 2WD and 16/22/19 mpg with 4WD and the ten-speed automatic, while the 6.2-liter gets just 16/21/18 mpg thanks to the added weight of the all-wheel drivetrain it comes paired with. Now, back to the so-called efficient diesel powertrain. In 2WD models, it returns 23/33/27 mpg, dropping to 22/26/24 mpg with 4WD. These figures will all vary somewhat based on the body style, trim, and tires. For instance, the TrailBoss 4WD with the 6.2-liter V8 can only manage 14/19/16 mpg.
The size of the fuel tank you get is determined by the cab or power- and drivetrain. If you choose the 2WD diesel, you only get 22 gallons of fuel. Double and Crew Cabs in other configurations get a 24-gallon tank and the Regular Cab models enjoy 28 gallons of gas. This means that you can expect to travel for around 594 miles in a 2WD diesel or a around 432 miles with the 4WD 6.2L.
