Chevrolet has updated its heavy-duty lineup of trucks for the 2024 model year and it will once again be one of the most capable options on the market. While we review the Silverado 2500HD separately, we are covering the 3500HD exclusively here. As before, this large pickup will compete against the Ford F-350 which is also arriving in an updated form. For the new Silverado 3500HD, expect a fresher design, a much-improved interior for upper trim levels, and even higher outputs from the legendary Duramax diesel engine. This is one pickup that makes light work of the most demanding jobs.

The release date for the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD has been scheduled for the first half of 2023. This is when production of the updated pickup will begin at General Motors' Flint Assembly in Michigan and Oshawa Assembly in Canada.
Chevy's latest pickup will be coming out at around the same time as the new Ford F-350 Super Duty.
We don't know the official price for the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD just yet as this information will only be shared closer to the launch. The 2023 model starts at $41,700 MSRP and goes up to over $80,000, so the 2024 model will likely come in at slightly more than this.
Of Chevy's rivals, the main one in the USA will be the Ford F-350. We don't know how much the new, 2023 model will cost, but the 2022 F-350 Super Duty has a similar base price of $40,960. More expensive than both - at least, based on currently available pricing - is the 2022 Ram 3500, which starts at $46,025.
You can identify the exterior of the Chevrolet 3500HD over the 2500HD by its available dually wheels and, if so equipped, its substantial width. The revised front fascia has a blunt, intimidating design with a broad grille and C-shaped LED graphic lamps. On LTZ, ZR2, and High Country trims, there are new dual-projector headlights. Additionally, there is a new animated lighting sequence that puts on a show when approaching or departing the truck.
On the hood scoop, there is now CHEVROLET lettering, while tow hooks are standard. For this update, there are six new Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD colors: Sterling Gray, Dark Ash, Radiant red, Auburn metallic, Lakeshore Blue Metallic, and Meteorite Metallic.
New wheel and tire options include 20-inch bright chrome wheels that are available for the LTZ and 20-inch off-road tires that can be equipped to selected models. The 18-inch polished aluminum dually wheels with all-terrain tires are an option for the 3500HD LTZ but standard on the High Country.
At the back, the truck has several available features to make the bed area more useful and easier to access. A six-position Multi-Flex tailgate is available, as is a power tailgate, a 120-volt power outlet, BedSteps, and a CornerStep rear bumper. As before, the Silverado 3500 HD can be had in Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab configurations.
This is one of the largest vehicles available for sale, and the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD's ample dimensions make that obvious. With various cab lengths available, the dimensions vary from one model to the next.
The shortest wheelbase belongs to the Regular Cab at 141.55 inches, increasing through the lineup and eventually extending to as long as 172 inches for the Crew Cab with the long bed. The body length of the 2024 Silverado 3500HD varies between 235.5 and 266 inches.
The width is substantially affected by whether the single-rear-wheel (SRW) or dual-rear-wheel (DRW) configurations are equipped. SRW models are 81.75 inches wide in Regular Cab form and 81.85 inches for all other derivatives. With the DRW setup, every model is 96.75 inches wide.
There isn't as much variance in terms of height; the truck is between 80.2 and 80.94 inches tall depending on the model. For clambering over inconsistent terrain at construction sites, the maximum ground clearance of 11.82 inches is useful. For DRW models, the ground clearance drops to a best of 10.47 inches.
Curb weight is monstrous. The lightest 3500HD is 6,329 pounds for the Regular Cab with two-wheel drive and the gas engine. At 8,246 lbs, the Crew Cab with four-wheel drive and the diesel engine is the heaviest. In all cases, the diesel engine raises the weight of the truck considerably; looking at the base model, there is a 647-lb weight penalty when choosing the diesel.
While Chevy didn't indicate the size of the 2024 model's standard and long boxes, these should match the 6.8- and 8.2-foot sizes of the current model, respectively.
A mighty truck needs a mighty engine and the 3500HD has two of those. The base engine in the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is the 6.6-liter V8 that makes 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque. While these outputs are the same as before, the six-speed automatic used previously has been replaced by a 10-speed Allison automatic. Chevy says that because of the smaller "steps" between gears, this V8 can now hold closer to peak power for longer periods than before.
The 6.6-liter Duramax V8 turbodiesel is easily the engine of choice as it now makes 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque at just 1,600 rpm. It also uses the Allison transmission but its extra power and more than double the torque increases its towing capabilities, while also making for more confident progress when the truck is fully loaded. This engine's outputs are up by 25 hp and 60 lb-ft, and Chevy claims that low-end torque production is up by 25%.
Although 0-60 times aren't that important, the new Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD pickup truck should be capable of getting close to six seconds for the benchmark sprint. That time will, however, be affected by how heavily laden the pickup is, which body style is applicable, and whether 2WD or 4WD are equipped.
Towing specs are vital in this category, but the 3500HD delivers. With conventional towing, the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD truck can manage up to 20,000 lbs with the diesel engine. The lowest towing capacity is 14,500 lbs for Regular Cab SRW variants with either engine. Fifth wheel/gooseneck towing raises the maximum to an impressive 36,000 lbs, matching the previous model.
Ford has not revealed towing capacities for the 2023 F-350, but the existing model nearly matches the Chevy with a maximum tow rating of 35,750 lbs. Ford's F-450 can tow even more at up to 37,000 lbs.
EPA ratings for trucks this size aren't published, but the Silverado 3500HD is assured to be a heavy drinker. The latest real-world results for the entire 3500HD lineup is 12.7 mpg combined, but expect single-digit numbers for heavier or harder-working models. With the current iteration of the diesel powertrain, it's possible to get up to around 14 mpg.
Fortunately, every model has a large tank to provide the truck with a somewhat decent range. The 36-gallon tank applies to all models besides the Regular Cab diesel (28 gallons) and Double Cab diesel with the standard bed (29.4 gallons).
Assuming a best of about 14 mpg, the diesel with the 36-gallon tank will have a range of about 504 miles, but this should be viewed as a best-case scenario.
Chevy's pickup was badly in need of an upgrade inside, so we're pleased to report that this has been implemented. The interior of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is a marked improvement over what came before, with a more modern infotainment interface, better materials, and a much more premium design. This is most noticeable for LT trims and above, which have a new center console and an all-new instrument panel.
On these upper trims, a 13.4-inch diagonal infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital driver information center modernize the cabin substantially. Google built-in compatibility makes using Google Assistant and Google Maps easier than ever, and paired with newly available adaptive cruise control, getting to your destination is less taxing than before. This is all matched with standard front pedestrian braking, lane departure warning, and forward collision alert.
As it is capable of towing massive trailers, Chevy has incorporated several available technologies to make this task safer. Adaptive cruise control now works in conjunction with a trailer to compensate for extra drag and longer braking distances. Enhanced Transparent Trailer, blind zone alert for trailers, and a Gross Combined Weight alert system that warns if the trailer weighs too much are all available.
If you intend on using your 3500HD as a leisure truck, too, you'll be satisfied with what's available higher up in the lineup. In High Country models, the seats in the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD are power-adjustable, heated, and ventilated in front. Metal badges on the center console and authentic open-pore wood trim make this the most luxurious option of the lot. Expect harder-wearing cloth on basic models, but Double and Crew Cabs should all still have sufficient space in the second row for passengers to be comfortable.
With the long bed, there is 83.5 cubic feet to play with for cargo. That matches the cargo space of the current Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD. The smaller standard bed should match the 69.5 cubic feet in the current model. As for payload, that maxes out at 7,290 lbs for the Regular Cab with the gas engine, 2WD, and the DRW setup, far more than the equivalent model with the SRW design (4,583 lbs). Heavier Crew Cab models naturally have a lower payload, but this is still a useful 6,735 lbs with the gas engine, 2WD, and DRW.
