2023 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Performance

No 0-60 mph time for the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is quoted, but given the 400-hp-plus outputs, it shouldn't be more than seven seconds. Top speed is of academic value, too, but for what it's worth, it's limited to less than 100 mph. Owners are far more interested in the Chevy's towing and hauling capabilities, and here the news is mixed. The 6.6L gas V8 is powerful enough, but it's linked to a rather old-school six-speed automatic transmission, which makes for a somewhat unimpressive reading next to the 7.3L ten-speed F-350. It's adequate at most but not nearly as effortless as the refined and very powerful (445 hp/910 lb-ft) 6.6L turbo-diesel V8 with its ten-speed Allison automatic transmission. The Silverado can tow up to 36,000 lbs, and although this is not the best in class, it is commendably stable when doing so, and has plenty of available trailering tech to make the job easier. RWD is standard, but 4WD is optional on all trims but the High Country, which is 4WD only. Every model should be able to tackle some off-roading, but the High Country gets A Z71 Off-Road Package to make this even easier.

Two powertrain options are available, one gas and one diesel, but both are 6.6L V8 engines. The gas engine in the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is naturally aspirated and develops 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque, sending its power to the rear or all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. The other engine is a turbocharged diesel with 445 hp and 910 lb-ft, linked to a heavy-duty Allision ten-speed automatic transmission, also with a choice of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

No EPA estimates are available for HD trucks, so we don't know the exact gas mileage or mpg figures for the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD. However, real-world reports suggest that the turbo-diesel hovers between a best of around 16-17 mpg and a worst of 11-12 mpg combined, with a most commonly quoted average of 14 mpg, which should give it a range of around 500 miles, thanks to a 36-gallon fuel capacity. Fewer people buy the gas V8, so there is less information available on its mileage figures, though the reports seem to indicate around 13 mpg.
