Best Electric Convertibles of 2020

Electric convertible cars are usually exactly the same as their gas-fed siblings in most areas, except the former offer an environmentally friendly solution. Still, the convertible EV is a relatively new concept, so the list of options is rather short. For now, the USA only has one option for sale in 2020. It’s no Mustang, but rather a tiny Smart EQ fortwo Cabrio. However, we are likely to see this range grow in years to come, with luxury brands such as BMW showing more interest in the technology. But, for now, you’ll be stuck with the little soft-top roadster from Smart.

Characteristics of Electric Convertibles

There may be only one model available, but we expect the best electric convertible cars of the future to share some similarities:

  • Open-air driving - Hardtop or soft, the top must come down. This means these cars are excellent for those who enjoy the wind in their hair on a Sunday afternoon, or any other time, really.
  • Engine - The current model available makes just 80 horsepower from its 60 kW motor, which is really underwhelming. The luxury brands looking to expand into the market will almost certainly bring higher-powered engines with them. A few sedan models use hydro-electric power in the form of fuel cells, so we may see that technology transfer over, too.
  • Driving range - Again, the only model available disappoints by this measure. It offers a total of 58 miles on a full charge, which is far below the average of this segment.

What to Consider Before Buying

These types of cars aren’t rare because they’re highly sought-after; they’re rare because hardly any automakers produce them. This lack of expertise means that flaws are to be expected:

Pros

  • Open-air driving experience
  • Relatively affordable
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Small enough to fit into any parking space

Cons

  • Underpowered motor
  • Underwhelming driving range
  • Cheap interior

FAQs

Is the Smart EQ fortwo Cabrio worth buying?

By many standards, the car is disappointing. It’s suitable for a single student that simply wants to buzz around the city, but there are plenty of other electric options available that offer far more space and better outputs as well as a much higher total driving range.

Are there more electric convertibles coming soon?

There aren’t any upcoming models scheduled for release in the next year or so. We hope other automakers start hopping onto the trend, but for now, you’re limited to a single variant.

Is it worth considering a second-hand model?

In most situations, looking at a 2019 variant will save you quite a bit of money for very little mechanical difference. However, the Smart is already affordable at base-level and it’s better to know the full history of your car, especially in cases like this.
