The Ford Escape Hybrid is a competent compact SUV that offers superb fuel economy numbers. Both the hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants make use of a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine producing 165 horsepower on its own, but with electric assistance, the output rises to 200 hp. With its bigger battery, the PHEV can be driven on electric power alone for 37 miles. Both FWD and AWD configurations are available on the regular hybrid, but the PHEV only drives the front wheels. In both cases, an electronic continuously variable transmission is used.

On the cheapest SE, the Escape Hybrid enjoys equipment like 17-inch alloy wheels, the SYNC 3 infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen display, and the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of driver aids such as automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and post-collision braking. Further up in the lineup, the Ford offers a reversing parking aid, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, LED fog lamps, and adaptive cruise control.
