2023 Escape Interior

The interior of the Ford Escape is thoroughly modern and does little to offend, except for the use of some cheaper plastics in places, especially on the base trims. The rest of the range's materials and presentation look smart enough, especially now that a digital gauge cluster is standard on the 2023 lineup. The infotainment screen sits high up on the dashboard's center stack, and a big 13.2-inch version is available - and standard on top trims. All controls are logically placed, sensibly sized, and easy to use. The top trims do a convincing job of imparting a premium, high-tech feel. There is a decent view all around, except for some rear blind spots that come with the upward-sloping glasshouse - although it's not the worst offender in the class on this score.

Seating and Interior Space

General seating comfort is excellent and the interior space utilization is really very good, considering the exterior dimensions, with maximum front and rear legroom of 42.4 and 40.7 inches available with the sliding second row in its rearmost position. Front-row headroom is very good at 40 inches, and the 39.3 inches available in the rear will be enough for all but tall adults. Some people have complained that the Ford Escape's seats are a bit too firmly padded though.

Hybrids have slightly smaller rear seats thanks to the under-floor hybrid gubbins. As is typical in this class, a center rear-seat passenger will be pinched and short of shoulder room, but the Escape can theoretically seat five, although only four will be comfortable on longer trips. The slim elbow rests are only just big enough to rest your arm.

Interior Colors and Materials

The choice of interior colors for the Ford Escape Base trim is restricted to a single one: Ebony Black cloth. The Active features a higher grade of cloth available in both Ebony Black or Space Gray; when the latter color is specified, the gray color is applied to the seat faces, center console, upper door cards, and lower dashboard. The ST-Line, ST-Line Select, and ST-Line Elite are all Ebony Black inside and get sportier front seats with heavier bolstering in a vinyl/cloth combination with red stitching, while the Platinum's seats are covered in perforated ActiveX leatherette in a choice of Ebony Black or the same Space Gray two-tone color scheme as the Active.

2023 Escape Trunk and Cargo Space

The decent cabin space does not come at the expense of utility, and the cargo space of the Ford Escape is fully class-competitive, with a maximum of 37.5 cubic feet available behind the second row (34.4 in the hybrids) with the sliding second row in its foremost position and 65.4 cubes of trunk volume behind the first row (60.8 cu-ft in the hybrids). It would have been even better if the rear seats folded totally flat, but they don't.

Interior oddments space is generous thanks to spacious door pockets front and rear with bottle holders, a glove compartment, and a large lidded storage cubby in the center console. There are two cupholders in the center console - complete with tabs in them to prevent beverage containers from tipping over - and six cupholders in total strewn about the interior across both rows on the base car (eight cupholders from the Active and up). Ahead of the center console is a place to store your cellphone and overhead is a sunglasses holder. The Active and up get a front passenger seatback pocket.
