2019 Ford Expedition Review

This massive load-lugger offers seating for eight with room to spare and comes packed with luxury and technology features. For 2019, the Expedition offers improved power an updated interior and a new automatic transmission.

What’s it like inside?

The Expedition has received a minor interior update and the quality of the materials used, especially on higher trim levels make it a very luxurious vehicle. Fit and finish is to a high standard too.

There is space aplenty in the first two rows and even the usually compromised third row offers comfortable seating for larger adults. Available captain's chairs for second row passengers offers even more comfort.

Cargo space is at the top of its class too with the third-row seats folding flat if required. The extended length Expedition Max adds to the already very generous storage area making the big Ford a default choice for large families who don't like to travel light.

How does it drive?

Thanks to a well-judged independent suspension setup and accurate steering responses the Expedition handles and rides better than you would expect. The aluminum-based chassis reduces overall curb weight while the additional cogs in the new transmission make the big SUV more responsive than before.

The suspension soaks up bad road surfaces and the quiet cabin make it a very comfortable cruiser, the larger 22-inch wheels on higher trim levels may harm the ride quality though. Despite its above average handling ability, the Expedition is still a very big vehicle and the standard rear camera and parking sensors will be called on frequently in parking lots.

What about the performance?

The 2018 Expedition is available with a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 which produces 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, Platinum trim boosts power to 400 hp and 480 lb-ft. A new 10-speed automatic transmission is standard and power is sent to the rear-wheels with all-wheel drive an available option.

The Expedition offers above average acceleration in its class despite some rivals having V8 engines, it is also relatively fuel efficient considering its size with a city/highway rating of 15/21 mpg.
