2022 Ford Explorer Hybrid Review: Hybrid Towing Champion

Midsize SUVs are only slightly less popular than their compact siblings, but they have to be far more well-rounded and capable to really stand out. The Ford Explorer Hybrid does just that, taking advantage of its larger dimensions to supply an ample amount of passenger and cargo space while the hybrid powertrain supplies some decent oomph to get it moving. The 3.3-liter V6 and electric motor develop a combined 318 horsepower, affording the SUV a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. As one of the nearest and dearest competitors to the Ford Explorer Hybrid, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid doesn't come close to this level of utility. Since the hybridized powertrain on the Explorer is only available to the upper-spec Platinum, it comes paired with a high-quality cabin and loads of standard features, making it quite appealing. But the lack of a more affordable option may hurt the 2022 Explorer when newcomers like the Kia Sorento Hybrid offer more trim options and a much lower starting price - albeit with a less powerful powertrain.

2022 Ford Explorer Hybrid Handling and Driving Impressions

In terms of driving experience, the Ford Explorer feels more like a car than a truck, with light and responsive steering that makes it easier to pilot the midsize SUV. This is ideal for town driving, where doing tight maneuvers is a breeze. The steering gains a little heft when you get moving, but the brakes are more than powerful enough to bring all that weight to a stop in a pinch. Road and wind noise are well-managed, though they can seep in a bit at high speeds.

It's also extremely comfortable on the road, with the suspension easily soaking up the bumps. Meanwhile, the heft of the vehicle helps to keep it feeling planted. The Explorer isn't really suited to off-road applications, despite having the option to add intelligent 4WD and a non-limited-slip rear axle; it will do fine on a dirt trail or inclement weather, however. The 3.3-liter V6 and electric motor develop 318 hp, enabling an impressive 5,000-lbs towing capacity. The midsize Ford hauls heavy loads around easily enough without feeling too encumbered, and has an effortless driving style overall.

Verdict: Is The 2022 Ford Explorer Hybrid A Good SUV?

The gas-only Ford Explorer is listed as the best-selling midsize SUV in the USA for the second quarter of 2022. With a more eco-friendly approach, the hybrid version offers even more benefits, although it's only available in one trim. Still, its strong points include a handsome exterior design that combines ruggedness with urbane modernity. And while the interior is well-built, it's nothing special; the materials are mediocre, but the features list is impressive. This includes an infotainment suite running Sync 3 and a good complement of driver-assistance systems. Unfortunately, the third row of seats is cramped and best left down to maximize cargo capacity.

The hybrid is significantly more fuel efficient than the rest of the lineup, but it's a lot more expensive than your run-of-the-mill hybrid SUV. In this case, it does mean a long list of standard equipment, at least. It's also powered by a capable engine that bestows it with a respectable tow rating, but with only partial safety reviews, the Explorer just doesn't stand out in any way when there are truly impressive rivals in the fray.
