2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Interior and Cargo

Ford F-150 Lightning Interior & Cargo Rating

2023 F-150 Lightning Interior

Ford knew from the outset that the Lightning would be used as both a work truck and a tech-obsessed family vehicle, so the interior had to suit the blue-collar construction site and the streets of San Francisco. The good news is that whether you go for the work-ready Pro model or a premium Platinum trim truck, the interior feels airy and modern. The base-level truck features a few more hard plastics on the dashboard along with vinyl seats, and the infotainment screen might not be as large, but it all feels very well built. A 12-inch digital productivity screen, dual-zone automatic climate control, and heated front seats are some welcome standard features even on the base model, but you can have everything from ventilated leather seats to an 18-speaker B&O Unleashed sound system if you're willing to pay for it.

Seating and Interior Space

The interior space of the Ford F-150 Lightning is generous, with a distinctly airy feel. Those in the front get ample leg and headroom, and those in the rear can't complain, either. The F-150 Lightning is definitely tall-person friendly and getting in and out of this truck is a pleasure thanks to a high roof line.

Of course, the vinyl seats in the base Pro are a world apart from the leather-trimmed massaging seats in the Platinum, but spaciousness can't be faulted. You also have to go for one of the top three trims to get a power-adjustable driver's seat.

Visibility is aided by large windows, and there is a scalloped section in front to improve outward visibility in the vicinity of the large door mirrors.

Interior Colors and Materials

The seating arrangement in the Ford F-150 Lightning starts with basic vinyl in Medium Dark Slate for the Pro, and that's the only choice for this entry-level model. This version also has more basic four-way manually-adjustable seats, a black vinyl floor covering, and a urethane-wrapped steering wheel.

The XLT sticks with Medium Dark Slate but swaps out the more hard-wearing vinyl for cloth upholstery. Here, the driver also benefits from an eight-way power seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Leather seats in a Black/Medium Dark Slate combination make their way into the Lariat, and the Platinum comes with extremely classy premium Nirvana leather seats in Black/Medium Dark Slate with Black tuxedo stripes. Here, the Active Motion front seats in the Ford F-150 Lightning can massage away any aches, and they combine with authentic real wood "End cut Oak" trim accents to impart a wonderfully premium air. Both the Lariat and Platinum have a ten-way power driver's seat linked to a memory system.

Overall, the materials strike a good balance between durability and acceptable perceived quality, and the higher-spec trim levels, especially the Platinum trim, border on premium. It's just a pity that the F-150 Lightning's interior colors are so limited.

2023 F-150 Lightning Trunk and Cargo Space

The major reason why people buy trucks is so that they can load them full of stuff, and the Ford F-150 Lightning's overall cargo space will please many. The 5.5-foot bed's specifications include a length of 67.1 inches, a width of 50.6 inches between the wheelhouses, and an inside height of 21.4 inches, for a total cargo box volume of 52.8 cubic feet.

If you still need more space, the F-150 Lightning has a sizable front trunk that offers a generous 14.1 cubic feet of space, perfect for a quick trip to the grocery store. Known as the Mega Frunk, it's not only larger than the trunk of several sedans but is packed with useful features like a drainable floor, bed lamps, electrical outlets, and USB chargers. It also houses a 2.4-kilowatt power source that can be used to juice up things like laptops and power tools. With the Extended Range battery, there is a 9.6-kW Pro Power Onboard system.

Inside, all models get two front cupholders, a decent-sized glove box, a center console storage compartment, and door pockets. All models also feature a flow-through center console with a stowable floor shifter and optional partitioned lockable, fold-flat storage. At the back, the 60/40 flip up split bench can be used to store more items.
