The Future of Cars

It’s only natural to be looking towards the next big thing, and we have no shortage of ideas thanks to being inundated with science fiction shows and literature. Of course, the real world is not quite so fantastical. For now, electric power is the hot topic, with more and more manufacturers making commitments to completely abandoned internal combustion engines in years to come. While this may seem like a tragedy to many old-school petrolheads, there is no denying the efficacy of electric powertrains. They are torquey and highly efficient, and the technology is improving year on year.

Propulsion isn’t the only thing advancing, though. Comfort and convenience features are becoming more intricate and readily available, too. Auto climate control, comprehensive infotainment systems, and oodles of driver assists are commonplace, even on mainstream automobiles. One of the most interesting advancements is self-driving technology. It will be some time yet before we can safely take our hands off the wheel and our eyes off the road, but we are getting there.

It’s all well and good to have ultra-modern technology under the hood and dashboard, but it would be disappointing if the exterior and interior looked exactly the same as any other car. But never fear, automakers are embracing the challenge of creating enticing new cars, both inside and out. Minimalism is especially popular right now, with clean, uncluttered cabins trending among brands like Tesla and Lexus. The exteriors are also quite different from what we’re used to, with classic grilles disappearing in favor of solid sheet metal, almost exclusive use of LCD lighting, and unique wheels and arches. Some of the concept images being released show even more outlandish designs, and whether they are something to look forward to or dread will depend on the individual.

There is more to future cars than their eccentric looks. Advanced new features will be another defining factor. Already, we are seeing cars with elaborate infotainment and safety systems, like the Cadillac Escalade and its more than 30 inches of high-definition displays. Smartphone integration has moved away from wired to wireless connectivity, and plenty of accident mitigation tech is already standard. Autonomous driving, at various levels of efficacy, is being added to more cars, and it should become more advanced and reliable as time goes by.
