2021 G70 Interior

Genesis benefited from studying luxury manufacturers for a few years before leaping into the segment. The result is a coherent, ergonomic interior that's easy to understand and lovely to sit in. Once you get in, that is. Due to its sporty aspirations, it sits a bit lower to the ground than the average sedan. Visibility is good all-round, but the hood slopes down quite drastically near the front, making it challenging to place while parking.

As standard, each G70 is equipped with dual-zone climate control, a leather steering wheel with a manually adjustable tilt-and-telescoping steering column, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a wireless charging pad. This list already includes some items the Germans would charge you extra for, while the V6 version makes a mockery of European vehicles.

Seating and Interior Space

The inside is a luxurious, spacious place, at least for front passengers. The front legroom is 42.6 inches, and the headroom is rated at 39.7 inches, dropping to 38.5 with the available sunroof. That's better than the C-Class and 3 Series, so long as you skip out on the sunroof. Things are less rosy in the back, with rear passengers only getting 34.8 inches of legroom and 36.9 inches of headroom.

Interior Colors and Materials

The G70 has a high-quality interior, though you do spot some low-rent pieces when you dig a little. Leatherette is standard on the base, and you can select between black or gray. Genuine leather/Nappa leather is standard on Elite and Prestige models, available in Black, Brown, or Gray. Black with gray stitching or Gray with red stitching is only available on the 3.3T Sport model.

We appreciate the driver-centric layout of the major controls, but the infotainment screen feels like an afterthought and subsequently comes across as cheap.

2021 G70 Trunk and Cargo Space

Customers perusing the compact luxury saloon segment in the USA expect a reasonable amount of cargo capacity. After all, they need to feel justified not buying a more popular crossover model. A vehicle in this segment should handle the daily shopping, a golf bag or two, and enough luggage for a family of four to go away for a weekend.

Unfortunately, the Genesis falls short in both the cargo and interior storage departments. The trunk is only 10.5 cubic feet, which is a huge disappointment compared to the BMW's 13 cubes and the C-Class's 12.6 cubes. Heck, even the Italians do better with the Alfa Giulia's 13 cubic feet of cargo capacity, and they're not exactly known for being practically minded people. You can fold the rear seats down in a 60/40 split, but Genesis does not supply a figure of the 'enlarged' cargo capacity.

2021 G70 Infotainment and Features

Features

The Genesis G70 puts most of its European rivals to shame when it comes to standard equipment. The base model gets power-adjustable front seats (12-way for the driver and eight-way for the passenger), heated side mirrors, LED taillights, keyless entry with push-button start, dual-zone climate control, and a hands-free automatic liftgate. The V6 adds a heated steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, heated and ventilated front seats, a wireless charging pad, and integrated ventilation, to name just a few. The top-tier Prestige and Sport packages add all the missing bits and pieces such as a surround-view monitor and a head-up display.

Infotainment

As mentioned earlier, the touchscreen does some damage to what is an otherwise pleasant interior. It's an eight-inch unit, and it comes with all the latest connectivity features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The problem we have is the unit Genesis chose for the G70. To differentiate Genesis models from standard Hyundais, it went as far as developing its upmarket interface, with fonts and colors befitting a luxury car, unfortunately the G70 comes with a Hyundai unit, and it's immediately apparent that it does not belong. We hope this is one of the upgrades Genesis makes to the upcoming facelifted model. The V6 models come standard with a 15-speaker Lexicon sound system and add built-in navigation.
