GMC Canyon safety ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS aren't available yet because the agencies still have to crash-test the brand-new truck. We expect it to improve on the four-star overall NHTSA rating and the mostly Good IIHS scores the old one managed.
NHTSA safety ratings are not available at this time.
The Colorado is fitted with safety features such as ABS, stability control, tire-pressure monitoring, and backup camera, as you'd expect, as well as six airbags. The standard Canyon Pro Safety driver-assistance suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, a following-distance indicator, Buckle to Drive, a teen-driver function, Hitch Guidance, Hitch View, and automatic high beams on the Elevation trim. The AT4 adds to these an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and the Denali and AT4X also get adaptive cruise control, blind-zone steering assist, a surround-view camera system, rear pedestrian alert, and rear parking sensors. The $445 Canyon Safety Plus package adds rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic braking, and blind-zone steering assist to the lower trims that come without these features. Forward- and rear-facing underbody cameras are only available as part of the $7,850 Edition 1 package, which is only offered on the AT4X trim.

The reliability of the GMC Canyon should be good and this brand-new truck already has an overall JD Power score of 82 out of 100, with 80 for Quality & Reliability. The very similar Chevrolet Colorado's scores are 83 and 85, respectively, so the Canyon should improve further. There are no recalls listed for the 2023 model yet.
The GMC Canyon's warranty cover is decent, with the limited bumper-to-bumper and corrosion-protection warranties valid for three years/36,000 miles, and the powertrain warranty with complimentary roadside assistance covered for five years/60,000 miles. The first maintenance visit is also included for free within the first year.
The 2023 Canyon has not been crash-tested yet, but the old one received a four-star crash rating and mostly Good IIHS scores, so we're expecting the new one to improve on these results.
The Canyon has six airbags. There are front and side airbags for the front passengers and curtain airbags for the outboard passengers in both rows.
