2023 Terrain Performance

Compact SUVs aren't expected to push you back in your seat or take your breath away, but consumers have become used to a certain level of performance, and unfortunately, the GMC Terrain doesn't exactly live up to those expectations. Under the hood, the turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine struggles to come alive, and according to independent testing, the 0-60 time will take almost nine seconds. Competitors such as the Mazda CX-50 are quicker. Performance becomes even duller when you move up to the Denali trim, which adds a significant amount of weight due to all the added features. The Terrain can tow up to 1,500 lbs, which is also less than many of its rivals.

Engine and Transmission

The same turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine powers all trim levels. For 2023 this power plant produces five more horsepower for a total of 175 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels or all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission. Despite the power increase, this powertrain isn't spicy at all and struggles to inspire, especially from the line. The throttle response isn't exactly sharp, but there is a decent shove of torque once the engine catches a wake-up. AWD models and the heavier AT4 and Denali can feel labored, especially when fully loaded. Competitors use similar setups, but the GMC Terrain feels especially lazy.
