2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid Review: A Nearly Infallible SUV Hybrid

by Aiden Eksteen

Honda has become well-known for its up-to-the-minute, safe, and reliable cars - qualities that have merged positively with the inherent perks carried by the crossover SUVs that sell so well in the USA. With its modern design, superb safety and reliability standards, and SUV-derived drivability and versatility, the 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid, after just one year on the market, has proven to be an exceptional vehicle that adds thrifty fuel economy returns to the mix of brilliant pros carried by the fifth-generation CR-V nameplate. The CR-V Hybrid SUV also offers a welcome dose of oomph over its gasoline-only counterpart, all thanks to its 212-horsepower 2.0-liter i-VTEC inline-4 engine that's been augmented with a propulsion motor, starter-generator, and two electric motors. Within the realm of subcompact crossover hybrid SUVs, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid offers more power and is more efficient, but the 2021 CR-V Hybrid SUV presents its own strengths in its drive and overall qualities - showing favorable advantages over the likes of the Ford Escape Hybrid and many others.

2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid Changes: What’s The Difference vs The 2020 CR-V Hybrid?

Honda introduced the new Honda CR-V Hybrid to the USA in 2020, which coincided with a facelift of the entire CR-V range. These changes included a fresher design, a few more interior convenience items, and added driver-assist features. Due to this recent update, the CR-V Hybrid continues into 2021 without any major changes and the model's mechanical specifications are exactly as before.

  • Peppy and frugal hybridized engine
  • Refined ride and compliant handling
  • Modern, upscale, and spacious interior
  • Driver-assists and safety systems galore
  • Expansive trunk room
  • Not as fuel-efficient as the RAV4 Hybrid

  • Could do with more high-tech features
  • Poor maximum towing capacity

Engine and Transmission

With the 2021 HR-V Hybrid SUV, Honda forgoes the familiar 1.5-liter turbocharged four-pot that's standard in the regular HR-V and employs a 2.0-liter i-VTEC Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder that produces up to 143 horsepower and 129 lb-ft of torque. It works in conjunction with a 181-hp propulsion motor, starter-generator, and two electric motors that all combine to churn out up to 212 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque. The CR-V Hybrid is, hence, the most powerful and most fuel-efficient of its brethren. Performance and economy are governed by an intune continuously variable automatic transmission and true mechanical all-wheel-drive system.

Verdict: Is the 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid A Good SUV?

Though it arrived fairly late to the hybrid SUV market, the CR-V Hybrid remains a very attractive offering as one of the best executed and well-rounded options out there. Its confident and efficient performance is met with a tranquil ride quality, which is then augmented by its modern, spacious, and featureful interior. It comes standard with a good range of creature comforts, conveniences, and safety features in particular, but some may find it wanting when it comes to the infotainment system and more luxurious features. Though it is fairly practical, too, the regular HR-V model does offer more in the way of in-cabin storage and trunk cargo capacity.

After an in-depth review of the 2021 Honda HR-V Hybrid by the NHTSA and the IIHS, the SUV earned a superb safety rating to match its proven reliability standings. It's an ideal family runabout that's also stylish and outstandingly frugal. The RAV4 Hybrid may be leading the pack, but the CR-V Hybrid is hot on its heels in many regards.

What Honda CR-V Hybrid Model Should I Buy?

The price of the entry-spec 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid SUV is $30,560, which increases to $33,150 for the mid-tier EX-L, and to $36,350 for the range-topping Touring. All three trims comes equipped with the same powertrain and offer the exact same performance, all moving up the trim line gets you are more luxury creature comforts and conveniences. For this reason, we're inclined to be savvy and aim for optimal value - which the entry-level EX packs. A seven-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard and comes installed with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality. The driver is granted a 12-way power-adjustable seat and both front seats feature heating. On the safety side, this model even comes standard with lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic high beams.
