The safety of the Honda HR-V is one area in which the crossover produces a class-leading performance. While the NHTSA has not tested the 2023 HR-V yet at the time of writing, the crash tests performed on it by the IIHS produced superb results, with top ratings of Good for virtually all criteria (only the headlights received an Acceptable rating) - and a 2023 Top Safety Pick+ award, which is the agency's highest accolade. We're expecting similar results when the NHTSA tests it.
NHTSA safety ratings are not available at this time.
As standard, all HR-V trims come with ten airbags, in addition to the usual ABS, stability and traction control, tire-pressure monitoring, and a backup camera. Most of the Honda Sensing driver-assistance suite is standard even on the LX, with automatic LED headlights with auto high-beam assist, front-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition, lane-departure warning, traffic-jam assist, and lane-keep assist all included. The only items the Sport adds to this list are safety features such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The EX-L is the only trim to also offer an auto-dimming rearview mirror, low-speed brake control, and front and rear parking sensors as standard.

Perhaps due to a few teething troubles typical of brand-new models, the Honda HR-V's reliability ratings as rated by J.D. Power is not great, with an uncompetitive score of 75 out of 100 for qualityand reliability - no improvement over the old model's result and significantly worse than the CX-30's score of 80. At least there haven't been any recalls yet on the 2023 model at the time of writing.
The 2023 Honda CR-V's warranty coverage is also only average at three years/36,000 miles for the limited warranty and five years/60,000 miles for the powertrain warranty.
Thanks to a class-leading list of standard safety and driver-assistance features - and a strong structure that earned a 2023 Top Safety Pick+ award in IIHS crash testing - the HR-V is a very safe car.
The HR-V has ten airbags - the front passengers get a frontal, side, and knee airbag each, the rear passengers get side airbags, and both rows are covered by a full-length curtain head airbag on each side.
