2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Review: Style And Substance

If you ever needed proof that you don't need to buy something that looks bland or boring to be environmentally friendly, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid provides just that. The mid-size sedan has striking looks and a premium feel, even if it lacks the acceleration and handling of some other cars in this segment. Nevertheless, it saves you money thanks to its hybrid powertrain, consisting of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor and a 270-volt lithium-ion polymer battery. The gas engine's specs work out to 150 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque, while the electric motor generates 51 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. Together, you get 192 hp, working through a six-speed automatic transmission. Fortunately, you aren't shamed for choosing the hybrid, as it looks very similar to its traditionally powered brethren. But are looks and economy all that matter when buying a hybrid, or can you expect more?

Verdict: Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Sedan A Good car?

Thanks to an extensive list of standard features across the three trim levels, both for safety and convenience, as well as a striking exterior design, the 2022 Hyundai Sonata hybrid is certainly worth considering. It offers incredible gas mileage and, thanks to a solar panel on the roof of the Limited trim, can even pay for itself in a small way. Inside, there's plenty of space for passengers. We also like the fact that the aforementioned striking design isn't obviously that of a hybrid, which makes it feel more like a normal car to drive and not something penned exclusively to garner attention from eco-warriors. We do note that Honda's alternative is more agile and exciting to drive, but do most buyers in this segment care about that? No, so why focus too much on it? Overall, this is a great family car, but if you want a fun drive, we recommend looking elsewhere.

What's the Price of the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata hybrid sedan is offered in three trims, the cheapest of which carries a base price of $27,750 before a $1,005 freight charge. Stepping up from the Blue trim to the SEL trim will increase the cost to $29,900, while the fully loaded Limited trim will see the Sonata hybrid price climb to an MSRP of $35,300. There aren't many options beyond a few accessories, so the 2022 Sonata Hybrid won't cost more than $37,870. Other rivals for sale in the US include the Toyota Camry Hybrid which begins at an almost identical $27,270 - the Toyota boasts phenomenal mpg ratings.
