2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid

2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Review: Green Quality

With the introduction of the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid, the Korean brand officially affirms its move towards a more eco-friendly and progressive automotive future. The Tucson is the brand's most popular seller and second hybrid SUV offering alongside the Sante Fe. Powering both the HEV and PHEV is a 1.6-liter inline-4 engine that's augmented with a 44.2-kWh electric motor for combined outputs of up to 226 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Differentiating the PHEV from the HEV is its 13.8-kWh battery pack and charging capabilities, giving it an impressive 70 MPGe combined mileage-equivalent figure and 33-mile all-electric drive range. The regular Tucson already offers pleasant performance characteristics but the Tucson PHEV and Hybrid bring a whole lot of eco-friendly, high-efficiency qualities to the table. Both retain the modern and stylish exterior, spacious interior, and exceptional safety and reliability standings that made the original so popular. With the USA's favorite Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime to contend with, are the new Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and PHEV good enough to win some market share?

2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Changes: 🚙What’s the difference vs 2021 Tucson Hybrid?

Both the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and the Plug-In Hybrid are all-new for the 2022 model year. The same powertrain is utilized in each, along with a standard all-wheel-drive setup. The Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid boasts a larger battery unit than the HEV - a 13.8-kWh unit that avails it with its all-electric benefits. The Hybrid is presented in three varying trims: the Blue, SEL Convenience, and the Limited. The PHEV is presented in just two: the SEL and the Limited.

Pros and Cons

  • Rapid off-the-line acceleration and ample power
  • Poised handling dynamics and comfy ride quality
  • Sporty and contemporary design and styling
  • Modern, featureful, and commodious interior
  • Loads of ultra-modern features and technology
  • Uncompetitive electric-drive range from PHEV
  • Just so-so fuel economy for the classification
  • Radio volume adjusted via buttons not knobs

Verdict: 🏁Is the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid a good SUV?

The regular Tucson is Hyundai's best-selling vehicle and the 2022 Hyundai Tucson PHEV and Hybrid are essentially just more eco-friendly versions that also offer better mpg figures. The new 226-hp 1.6L engine provides more than enough power for the compact SUV and is reasonably efficient, too. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission for smooth, quiet, and efficient performance, and transfers power through to a permanent AWD. Unfortunately, many competitors boast more impressive figures. The Hyundai Tucson PHEV's 33-mile electric range is also just middling for the classification. Nevertheless, the Tucson Hybrid SUV remains one of the most pleasant cars to drive, delivering a serene ride quality to boot.

The all-new Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and PHEV models share the look and feel of the regular Hyundai Tucson and are generously outfitted with creature comforts, conveniences, and technology even at the base level. They're exceptional family SUVs and decent eco-friendly alternatives. And, while there is no hybrid-specific safety review for the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, the exceptional ratings from the IIHS for the gasoline version should carry over.

🚘What's the Price of the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid?

The price of the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid starts at an attractive $29,050 for the Blue. The mid-spec SEL Convenience asks for $31,650 in exchange for the additional features it brings to the table. At the top of the range is the Limited, which comes fully loaded with all the specs the new Tucson line has to offer, all for just $37,350. If you believe you'll benefit from a 32-mile all-electric driving range, then consider the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid, which has a starting cost of $34,750 for the entry-spec SEL, while the Limited breaks the $40k mark at $42,550.
