It may not look it from the outside but he Infiniti Q70 range has been on sale now for a number of years now, while it still offers a stylish design and a pair of strong engines, the Q70 is lagging behind its competitors in the latest technology and safety systems. The Q70L is the range-topping extended wheelbase version and offers some minor changes for the 2018 model year.
The cabin feels upmarket and luxurious, the seats and door panels are covered in high quality materials while the major controls have a solid feel to them. Some minor controls don’t feel quite so substantial and the infotainment is distinctly last-generation which is a disappointment in an otherwise well-appointed interior.
In the extended wheelbase model, rear passengers get an additional 5 inches of legroom and both rows offer comfortable seating with a range of adjustments to suit all shapes and sizes. The cargo loading area is narrower than most and while the trunk capacity is acceptable, the rear seatbacks do not fold down which may be an issue for some shoppers.
For a big heavy and long sedan, the Q70L feels a lot sportier than it has any right to be. The controls are well-weighed and the Infiniti tackles a set of bends with composure, the brakes and transmission are up to the job too, and if you desire some extra power there is a V8 engine option.
The quiet cabin and smooth drive make for a very good highway cruiser, the ride is generally smooth although rougher road surfaces can upset the ride quality.
The Infiniti Q70L comes with a base 3.7-liter V6 with 330 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque or a 5.6-liter V8 which offers 416 hp and 414 lb-ft. Both are equipped with a 7-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive an option.
Performance is strong on both models and the automatic transmission performs well in both leisurely and press-on driving situations. The 5.6-liter V8 in particular offers a muscular mid-range and manages the 0-60mph sprint in less than 5-seconds.
What neither engine offers is competitive fuel consumption, the RWD 3.7-liter is the most economical with an 18/25 combined mpg rating while at the other end of the scale, the AWD 5.7-liter offers 16/23 mpg.
There are essentially two trim levels that can be had in either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.
The Q70L 3.7 LUXE Trim offers heated rear seats, 10-way power heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rearview monitor, and 8-inch color display.
A no-cost Essential Package includes a surround view monitor, Bose 10-speaker audio system, front and rear sonar system, Leather interior, Navigation, climate-controlled front seats, heated steering wheel and an in-dash CD player.
The Q70L 5.6 LUXE includes the Essential Package and adds an around view monitor with object detection. The available Sensory Package includes a 16-speaker Bose audio system, power rear sunshade, semi-aniline leather seats, premium soft-touch materials, quilted seats with additional bolstering and unique interior detailing.
The ProACTIVE Package adds a range of safety systems including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind spot warning and intervention, backup collision intervention and adaptive front lights with auto-leveling headlights.A performance tire and wheel package and performance brake pad set are also available.
The Infiniti Q70L is a luxurious and sporty sedan with a comprehensive list of luxury equipment and handling and performance that will please enthusiasts.
Its looks have aged well and while the available V8 engine and that spacious interior do have a certain appeal, the outdated technology and poor economy levels see it outclassed by the majority of its newer competitors.
