A reworked version of the Fisker Karma, the 2020 Karma Revero GT plug-in hybrid luxury sports sedan is ready to take the young automaker to the next level. Initially, the Revero GT seems intent on mixing it with the big guns: there are hints of Aston Martin from the front and the GT uses the BMW i8’s 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine as part of its hybrid powertrain. Together with twin electric motors, total system outputs are 536 horsepower and 550 lb-ft of torque. It’s enough for a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds.
The gasoline engine doesn’t actually drive the wheels; rather, it acts as an onboard generator by supplying energy to the 28-kWh battery pack. Acceleration off the line will be familiar to anyone who has driven an EV, which is to say immediate, the powertrain doing well to overcome the Revero GT’s considerable 5,050-pound heft. Karma claims an all-electric driving range of 80 miles and a total range of 360 miles when the gas engine and a full tank of fuel are taken into account. Plugging into a 240-volt wall outlet will recharge the battery in around four hours.
Of course, a new player among a raft of established players like Porsche needs more than just an advanced powertrain to compete - it has to be desirable, too. Thankfully, the sensuous curves and stretched body are both attractive and distinctive. LED headlights and taillights, along with 21-inch wheels, are fitted as standard. There’s also a premium interior with a modern infotainment system. It all adds up to an intriguing alternative to the establishment. The Karma Revero GT will start at a pricey $135,000, with first deliveries at the end of this year, but you’ll also be paying for its exclusivity as a mere 500 units are expected to be produced in California in 2020.
