The exterior of the Kia Niro is definitely unique, looking more like a lifted hatchback than your traditional crossover. The tiger nose grille features a large intake on the lower half of the front bumper, with a small, wing-like section above, separated by a solid panel that runs from corner to corner. There is a silver skidplate running along the underside, or chrome from the EX Touring up. The LED headlights are located at the very edges of the front fascia, running back along the side profile a little. You also get LED daytime running lights and LED taillights. Speaking of the rear, there is a matt black liftgate spoiler with a brake bar, as well as brake lights running down the sides. From the EX upwards, roof rails are added, and from the EX Touring, the matte black wheel arches and body-color door handles are replaced with gloss-black and chrome-accented variants, respectively. A sunroof is included on every trim above the EX. The majority of the models ride on 16-inch wheels, but the Touring trims use 18-inchers. Only the SX Touring gets LED projector headlights.
The Kia Niro has grown a bit in terms of its dimensions from the last generation. Length now measures 174 inches, while the wheelbase is 107.1 inches. The crossover stands 60.8 inches tall and is 71.9 inches from side to side. The curb weight varies between standard hybrid and plug-in, with the former starting at 3,071 pounds and the latter maxing out at 3,336 lbs.

Kia keeps things simple for the exterior color palette on the Niro. The entry-level LX gets access to most choices, including Steel Gray, Graphite Gray, and Fire Orange Metallic for free, or Runway Red, Snow White Pearl, and Aurora Black Pearl for an additional $395. From there, the EX expands the standard options with Cityscape Green and Mineral Blue. However, only the SX models get the two-tone paints: Cityscape Green/Black Aeroblade and Mineral Blue/Black Aeroblade, both of which cost $195.
Aurora Black Pearl and Mineral Blue are both very attractive choices, but the two-tone paints exclusive to the SX trims have a certain appeal.
The standard premium paints all cost $395.
Though it is not an option on lower trim levels, a sunroof is standard from the EX Touring upward.
There is a single tailpipe, cleverly hidden beneath the rear bumper.
The majority of the Niro models are outfitted with 16-inch wheels, while the Touring models of the EX and SX each ride on 18-inch wheels.
