2020 Discovery Interior

Unlike Land Rover products of old, you won't find any shoddy plastic bits and sagging headliners in the newest Land Rover Discovery, it's quite the opposite in fact. Step inside the cabin and you're greeted by a decidedly upscale interior that looks and feels great, and with the help of a panoramic roof also feels airy and spacious. We love the fact that Land Rover incorporates chunky styling with luxurious details, and as with the exterior, it gives off a sense of style and functionality that is rarely seen in other cars of this class. With standard leather seats across the range, and tasteful wood, gloss, or aluminum inlays, there is no doubting that the Discovery is a premium product, and we think it can comfortably sit with its German counterparts in terms of overall interior design and execution.

Seating and Interior Space

The Discovery is offered with five or seven seats, and we found that five adults will fit comfortably in the first two rows, while the third row will best serve small adults and children. Getting in and out of the Discovery is a hassle-free affair, thanks to its lifted ride height and wide-opening doors, but access to the third row requires the second row to be folded, which can pose a problem for parents who've got their hands full. Visibility is good in the front and sides, but the relatively small rear window means that you'll have to rely on the reverse camera more often than not. The front seats are comfortable and offer enough support during off-roading adventures and long-distance road trips. The front headroom comes in at just under 40 inches, while those in the rear get 39 inches. Front-seat legroom is 39 inches, while second-row occupants get 37.6 inches.

Interior Colors and Materials

The interior of the newest Land Rover Discovery is far removed from the practical interiors the brand is known for in years past, and as with the Range Rover, looks and feels premium, and can easily compete with those of the BMW X5 and Volvo XC90. Firstly, the grained leather seats, or Windsor leather seats in higher trim levels are a good touch. The standard leather in the SE and HSE can be had in Ebony Black or Acorn Beige, with Light Oyster/Espresso available to the HSE. An upgrade to Windsor leather costs $1,245 on the HSE in the same color schemes, but switching the Acorn hue for Vintage Tan and Black. These options are available to the HSE Luxury at no extra cost. The headliner can be specified in Light Oyster Morzine or Ebony Morzine for $360, while interior accents and inlays are offered in Veneer Gloss black as standard on the base model, with Dark Satin Brushed Aluminum or Natural Shadow Oak Veneer at cost. HSE and Luxury trims get more veneer options, such as Natural Shadow or Charcoal Oak at no cost, or High Gloss Charcoal Oak for $615.

2020 Discovery Trunk and Cargo Space

Apart from offering good passenger space, the 2020 Land Rover Discovery also provides excellent trunk and cargo space; however, cars fitted with third-row seating limits that space. Behind the second row, the 2020 Discovery offers a substantial 41.2 cubic feet, which is over seven cubic feet more than you'll get in the BMW X5. With all the seats folded, the Discovery offers 83.7 cubic feet of space, once again beating the BMW, but the Volvo XC90 offers two cubic feet more in this instance.

Small-item storage is excellent, thanks to the inclusion of a myriad of storage bins located throughout the interior, including second-row under-seat storage bins.

2020 Discovery Infotainment and Features

Features

The 2020 Land Rover Discovery is a luxury car through and through, and if the upscale interior didn't already convince you, the list of standard features will. Starting with the base model SE, you get a standard auto-dimming rearview mirror, two-zone climate control, power-adjustable seats, as well as ambient interior lighting, push-button start, and keyless entry. The mid-range HSE brings a few notable features to the table, including an electrically adjustable steering column, three-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. If the HSE doesn't tickle your fancy, then you can opt for the HSE Luxury, which literally has the word 'luxury' in the title, so you know it has to be good. The HSE Luxury adds heated front and rear seats, electrically reclining second-row seats, and powered third-row seats. The Landmark trim car is the new kid on the block and adds analog Dials with a central TFT display, as well as four-zone climate control, seven seats, and heated front and rear seats. Lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, a 360-degree parking aid, and blin spot assist are standard across the range.

Infotainment

As with any modern luxury car, the 2020 Land Rover Discovery comes fitted with a competent infotainment system that offers all the functionality you'd expect from a car in this price range. The infotainment display is a 10-inch unit that is neatly mounted in the dashboard and sits below the central air vents. This display offers clear imagery, but we found that the system can be overwhelmed when inputs are made too quickly. Standard infotainment features include Bluetooth streaming, voice control, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The standard sound system consists of ten speakers and provides clear treble and bass tones. HSE models add SiriusXM satellite and HD radio, integrated navigation, wi-fi hotspot capability, and a ten-speaker Meridian sound system, which outclasses the standard system by a significant margin. The HSE Luxury gets an even better system in the form of a Meridian surround sound system with 16 speakers and a subwoofer. We found that Wings by the legendary band Vader sounded great on this system.
