With the Range Rover Evoque having undergone a full redesign for the 2020 model year, Land Rover promises that the luxury compact SUV is better than it's ever been before. At present, the nameplate has already received more than 217 international awards and global sales have climbed to over 772,000. In previous years, the Evoque was overshadowed by its more refined and modern counterparts, the BMW X2, Audi Q3, and Mercedes-Benz GLA, but with its overhaul, the Evoque is now more capable on and off the road, with a far more contemporary cabin, and with a comprehensive range of innovative technologies. Its familiar 2.0-liter turbo-four has been reworked to deliver either 246 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque in standard and First Edition models, or 296 hp and 295 lb-ft in R-Dynamic models. Range Rover Evoque Exterior

The sophisticated Range Rover Evoque keeps its novel yet recognizable design despite the complete overhaul. In terms of exterior features, while S models are outfitted with LED headlights, SE, HSE, and First Edition models get premium auto high beam and leveling LED headlights with integrated signature daytime running lights, and signature Hi-Line tail lights. All models feature flush deployable door handles. The First Edition model is the only one that features front fog lights. 18-inch alloy wheels look a little lost in the bulky wheel arches of the S models, fortunately, the 20-inch alloy wheels fitted to all other models are more befitting.

Its overall body length of 172.1-inches is identical to last year, it's wheelbase, however, is slightly longer at 105.6-inches, affording more room to the rear passengers and cargo bay. It's also somewhat taller now too, standing at 64.9-inches in height, and broader at 78.6-inches wide (82.7-inches with mirrors folded out). Exterior Colors

There's a wide variety of exterior paint colors available within the Evoque lineup. The solid paint options include Fuji White and Narvik Black, both of which are no-cost options. The metallic paints all carry an additional charge of $610, these include Indus Silver, Firenze Red, Santorini Black, Kaikoura Stone, Yulong White, Seoul Pearl Silver, and Eiger Grey. There are also two premium metallic paint options available, Carpathian Grey and Silicon Silver, both of which carry a $1,325 additional charge. Range Rover Evoque Performance

Two engines are available in the Evoque range, namely the turbocharged P250, which offers 246 hp and 269 lb-ft on base and First Edition trims, while the P300 is also turbocharged and mated to a mild-hybrid system to make 296 hp and 295 lb-ft on the R-Dynamic trims. With the base engine, the Evoque is capable of motoring from 0-60 mph in around seven seconds and is capable of reaching an electronically limited top speed of 143 mph - that's a slight improvement over last year's top speed of 135 mph. The dialed-up engine will take the Evoque from 0-60 mph in a slightly quicker mid-six-second dash, and avails it with a marginally higher top speed of 150 mph.

The Evoque is a commanding and relatively quick compact SUV regardless of what engine is in play, remaining on par with the Audi Q3 and proving faster than the base form of the Mercedes-Benz GLA. The Evoque's maximum towing capacity of 3,968-lbs is the same as last year and remains relatively average for the class with the Q3 proving more capable while the GLA is unrated.

Engine and Transmission

Under the hood of every Evoque model is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-pot engine that's coupled to a nine-speed automatic gearbox. In the S, SE, and First Edition models, the powertrain is tuned to deliver outputs of 246 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels, and in the R-Dynamic models it's dialed-up to deliver 296 hp and 295 lb-ft. Both states of tune are a little higher than what they were in the same 2.0-liter turbo-four last year, from 237 hp and 251 lb-ft in the lower state of tune and 286 hp and 295 lb-ft in the higher state of tune.

Both powertrains provide sufficient pull to get the heavy SUV on the move, and the massaged P300 offers slightly more low-end torque for a more assertive feel. But, that being said, it does feel slightly lethargic, with the nine-speed auto 'box taking its time to shift too. Once up to speed, things improve somewhat, and passing or merging is done with ease. While neither engine option is outstanding, they both suffice - and neither is particularly adept at stop-and-go traffic scenarios. Still, take the Evoque off-road and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Handling and Driving Impressions

Capable both on and off the road, the Range Rover Evoque is a fun-to-drive compact SUV with a potent engine and highly capable terrain management system. It's actually rather sporty on the road, though it wouldn't satisfy driving enthusiasts as much as the BMW X2 or Mercedes Benz GLA-Class would. Nevertheless, its steering is responsive and accurate - it could be a little more communicative of the wheels, especially considering the Evoque's off-road capabilities, but it's otherwise nicely weighted for easy control. The SUV's suspension is pliant and well-damped, yet firm enough to afford the Evoque some cornering composure without it eliciting too much body roll. Unfortunately, because of the Evoque's firmer than typical ride and large wheels, it's not as comfortable on the road as most other luxury SUVs, and even minor road abrasions and undulations can be felt through the cabin.

With adequate wading depth, ground clearance, and approach/departure angles, the Evoque certainly offers some impressive off-road capability, too. The Evoque is capable of wading through water of up to 23.6-inches deep, that's 4.1-inches up on the older models' capability of 19.6-inches.

Range Rover Evoque Gas Mileage

With the increase in power, the Evoque's engine, regardless of the state of tune, is now a little thirstier too. 2019 models managed 22/29/25 mpg city/highway/combined with the old base engine, and 2020 cars now get 20/27/23 mpg from the current one. The old dialed-up engine returned figures of 21/29/24 mpg, and the current P300 unit returns 21/26/23 mpg. So, while there has been a substantial decrease in efficiency from the previous year, the P300 mild-hybrid system remains the most economical option.

With its 17.7-gallon gas tank filled to the brim, the Evoque should manage a range of about 407-miles before requiring a stop for gas.

Range Rover Evoque Interior

Range Rover has done a good job of sprucing up the Evoques cabin as it was quickly starting to show its age before the overhaul; now it exudes modernity and an impression of high-quality comfort. The new 12.3-inch driver display in upper-level trims and the dual ten-inch touchscreen displays contribute vastly to the Evoque's contemporary guise. The overall build quality of the Evoque is great and the materials used on the inside are all very high quality and add to the cabin's exceptional level of comfort. Unfortunately, while room is ample upfront, passengers may find the rear seats to be a little cramped, and rivals offer a little more in this department.

Seating and Interior Space

There are five seats in the Range Rover Evoque, all of which are comfortably cushioned, adequately supportive, and with plenty of adjustability. The driver is positioned with a commanding view of the road ahead and with decent visibility to every angle except rearward, where the tiny rear window is pretty much useless, especially with occupants in the back. Range Rover came up with the nifty ClearSight rearview mirror camera which helps to aid this, however, and the standard parking assist sensors make maneuvering as easy as can be. While headroom is ample throughout, legroom can be a little limited in the rear seats but in general, the Evoque is impressively spacious inside.

Interior Colors and Materials

A leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather seating upholstery comes standard as of the base Evoque S model, the S and SE feature a Light Oyster Morzine headliner and either an Ebony or Cloud interior with gradated linear bright aluminum trim finish, and ebony grained leather upholstered seats. Deep Garnet perforated Windsor leather is optional at between $2,320 and $2,740, and equips an extended leather upgrade too. The R-Dynamic models receive a perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel and feature either an Ebony, Cloud, or Garney/Ebony cabin and morzine headliner with linear dark aluminum trim finish. A perforated soft grain leather-wrapped steering wheel with an Atlas bezel is featured in the First Edition which presents a Cloud/Ebony interior with grained Cloud/Ebony leather upholstered seats.

Range Rover Evoque Trunk and Cargo Space

Land Rover states that with the new, longer wheelbase, the Evoque's cabin has been afforded more legroom and better storage capacity, and the cargo bay has increased in size by six percent. Now at 21.5 cubic feet, the Evoque's cargo bay should be able to carry a couple of small pet crates. If more cargo room is required, the 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats offer plenty of storage versatility and with all seats folded down, expands the overall cargo room to 50.5 cubic feet.

Land Rover has also done a good job providing various meaningful storage solutions within the cabin itself. All four doors are fitted with sizable pockets capable of holding bottles, the passenger-side glove box is reasonably spacious, and the center stack comprises a small-items tray beneath the AC controls, two cupholders, and a spacious armrest cubby. There are seatback map pockets on the back of the front seats, and another two cupholders in the center rear seat backrest.

Range Rover Evoque Infotainment and Features


Some felt that Land Rover was a bit close-fisted with the specification levels of the Evoque before, but this year, even the base model comes comprehensively outfitted. Some standard base-level features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, ten-way power-adjustable front seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Some standard driver-assists include a rearview camera, front and rear parking aids, and traffic sign recognition with an adaptive speed limiter. The SE additionally features a 12.3-inch high-def interactive driver display, 14-way power-adjustable front seats with memory settings, and a power-operated tailgate. The R-Dynamic S and SE models are outfitted similarly to their S and SE base model counterparts, differentiated only cosmetically and by their powertrain. In the R-Dynamic HSE there's keyless entry, 16-way power-adjustable front seats with memory settings, and a power gesture operated tailgate. Included as standard on the top-of-the-line First Edition are a color head-up display, heated steering wheel, and heated front seats.


Infotainment is another area Land Rover didn't skimp out on with this year, in all but the base S model are dual ten-inch high-res touchscreens, both are configurable so controls can be allocated according to the driver's preferences. The S comes standard-fit with just the one ten-inch touchscreen. While a stock six-speaker sound system is standard in the S and SE models, the HSE and First Edition are outfitted with a ten-speaker Meridian sound system plus a subwoofer. All models feature functionality in Navigation with 2D and 3D map displays, in both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, HD and SiriusXM satellite radio connectivity, and in Wi-Fi hotspot capability. Unfortunately, while the dual touchscreens and the actual infotainment setup is contemporary and comprehensive of functionality, the interface's responses are painfully slow.

Range Rover Evoque Problems and Reliability

The 2020 Evoque has already been subject to three major recalls, the first problem pertaining to malfunctioning windshield wipers, which would result in reduced driving visibility during wet weather conditions. The second issue had to do with the headliner plate which would detach in the case of an accident with the deployment of the side curtain airbags. The last recall also had to do with the improperly manufactured headliner.

For added peace of mind, Land Rover offers a four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty, which also covers the powertrain. There's also six years of corrosion perforation protection included with the purchase of new vehicles.

Range Rover Evoque Safety

Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has evaluated any year model of the Range Rover Evoque for its crashworthiness. The Euro NCAP gave the 2019 year model a five-star overall rating, but is yet to crash test the overhauled 2020 model, which we suspect will carry-over its top-notch safety rating.

Key Safety Features

Every Evoque is installed with a comprehensive system of eight airbags, including driver, passenger, side curtain, knee and thorax airbags. These, along with the essentials such as ABS, EBD, ETC, CBC, and RSC are complemented by a comprehensive consignment of standard driver assist features too. This includes a driver condition monitor, a rearview camera, lane-keep assist, emergency braking, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition with an adaptive speed limiter. A 360-degree parking assist system is standard as of the S model, too along with a rear traffic monitor, and clear exit monitor. The First Edition comes standard with a ClearSight interior rearview mirror camera too. A ClearSight under vehicle camera is also available for most models in the lineup.

Verdict: 🏁Is the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque a good SUV?

With its recent overhaul, the Range Rover Evoque is certainly better than it used to be. While it's kept its stylish design, it now boasts a more polished drive, sporty handling dynamics, and improved off-road capability, thanks to its more powerful turbo-four and the new mixed-metal Premium Transverse Architecture. Land Rover has packed a whole lot more value into the Evoque, with every model now presenting a far more contemporary cabin and one that's feature-rich even at the base level. Despite what engine is in play, the Evoque is relatively uneconomical on fuel consumption, in fact, it's less fuel-efficient than it was last year, revealing the British marque's priority focus on bolstering performance and capability.

Unfortunately, while the new dual ten-inch touchscreen displays look really great, the infotainment system itself is frustratingly slow; there are pronounced lag spikes when switching between menus. It's otherwise easy to use and comes installed with plenty of functionality, so if you have patience, this won't be that problematic. Some rivals offer much more intuitive systems, however.

There's not much to dislike about the Evoque, especially with its 2020 redesign, but even so, many of its rivals offer better performance in general, a more refined ride quality, and more value for the money overall.

Pricing for the Range Rover Evoque has gone up for the 2020 model year, but its value has gone up a whole lot too. The S is the entry point to the Evoque lineup and is presented with a starting MSRP of $42,650, the SE follows with many additional features and is priced at $47,200. After the base models, come the R-Dynamic trio which come equipped with the dialed-up turbo-four. The R-Dynamic S is priced at $46,600, the R-Dynamic SE at $51,150, and the R-Dynamic HSE at $55,800. The First Edition comes equipped with the base engine but is fully-specced as the top-of-the-line model, it carries a sticker price of $56,850. All prices are excluding Land Rover's $995 destination and handling charge as well as any tax, registration, and licensing fees.

Within the cabin, there's a seven-inch TFT driver display, leather-wrapped steering wheel, ten-way power-adjustable front seats, and leather seating upholstery. A ten-inch infotainment touchscreen and six-speaker sound system cover infotainment with full smartphone integration. Driver assists include a rearview camera, lane-keep assist, driver condition monitor, emergency braking, front and rear parking aids, cruise control and speed limiter, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive speed limiter.

The SE rides atop 20-inch alloy wheels and is fitted with auto high beam assist and leveling headlights, and with a power-operated tailgate. For the S, SE, and HSE, there's a $660 Black Exterior Pack that outfits the models with predominantly gloss black exterior cosmetics. All models can be equipped with the $1,400 Tow Pack which comprises a towing valance, receiver, harness, and module. There's a $500 Premium Rear Seat Convenience Pack available to all as well and includes a Click and Go base, hanger, and hook, plus a leather seatback storage rack. A $640 Cold Climate Convenience Pack is available too and comprises a heated steering wheel, heated windshield, and heated washer jets. With making a choice between a trim in the luxury segment, the top-spec variation of most nameplates make the most sense as the fully-equipped, most luxurious options. It's with this perspective that we recommend the R-Dynamic HSE which not only comes comprehensively outfitted with features, but also with the more powerful dialed-up turbo-four which improves overall performance slightly over the standard engine, which the First Edition gets. With the Velar coming in at a starting MSRP of $56,300 and the top-spec model nearing the $100,000 mark, buyers will want to know whether the Velar is worth the $15,000 upshot in price over the Evoque. The Velar is available with a powerful V8 engine option which gives it a 0-60 mph sprint time of just 4.3 seconds which is mighty impressive for the class, but of course those thrills come at the expense of fuel economy, with estimates hovering around 15/20/17 mpg. The Velar's standard engine is otherwise the same as the Evoque's P250 unit, and performs identically, barring in maximum towing capacity where the Velar is capable of tugging a max of 5,511 lbs. The Velar is a little bigger and subsequently offers more passenger room throughout the cabin, and a little more practicality with 29.4 cubes of cargo room behind the rear seats. Ultimately, if you don't need a really fast, really capable off-road luxury SUV that you're likely not going to be taking off-road, then the Evoque is a suitable option. 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque vs Land Rover Range Rover Sport

As its name suggests, the Range Rover Sport is a far more performance-oriented luxury SUV than the Evoque, with a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine rumbling beneath the hood producing 567 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque for all four wheels. With its mighty V8 the Sport is capable of sprinting from 0-60 mph in just 4.3 seconds, although there are other powertrains to choose from, which also drops the price a little. Its sportier underpinnings also give it more capability around the corners and subsequently a more enjoyable driving experience. The Sport happens to be a little more practical than the Evoque too, offering more passenger room and more cargo capacity with 28 cubic feet behind the rear seats. The Range Rover Sport is quite a bit pricier than the Evoque but if its highway thrills, off-road chills, and fewer dollar bills you're looking for, it's the one to go for.
