2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Review: All-Rounder Rangie Aging Well

The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SUV is the latest iteration of the second-generation crossover that was launched in 2014, and in this review, we determine whether it is still a good buy in its class, despite its age. The Sport was never meant to do "sport" quite the same as a BMW X5, rather treading the middle ground and providing a more dynamic drive than the full-fat Range Rover. And yet, it retains a decent measure of proper off-road ability in the midsize luxury 5-door SUV class that rivals such as the X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE cannot match.

It still does a good job of being most things to most people, with a range of engine choices that includes gas, mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and diesel options, as well as a range-topping supercharged V8. Power outputs range from 254 to 567 horsepower, and it makes good on its promise of providing a more exciting drive than the Range Rover while offering an available 3rd row of seating, even though there isn't much space back there.

Verdict: Is the 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport A Good SUV?

Being a Land Rover product and, therefore, possessed of excellent off-road ability, the 2021 model year Range Rover Sport does a great job of melding this talent with fun on-road handling and the ability to feel equally at home on the daily commute or as a car for families. Further high points include an extensive range of powertrains that include MHEV and PHEV options, as well as the availability of third-row seating.

However, if the Sport part of its name is very important to you, the Germans still do it better - and they generally offer better cargo capacity and third-row seating space as well. The Rangie also doesn't fare well in reliability surveys nor its safety rating - if it had an official one in the US - would probably reflect its age as well. But if you want a measure of dynamic handling combined with off-road ability that comfortably bests its rivals, this 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport review goes to show that it still makes a strong case for itself.

What Land Rover Range Rover Sport Model Should I Buy?

The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport prices start at $69,500 for the base SE MHEV six-cylinder gas Range Rover Sport in 355-hp tune. You get decent value for money, good performance, decent fuel economy, and a 7,716-pound towing capacity - and it is equipped with enough luxury and safety features that you won't feel too short-changed opting for the entry-level vehicle. But stretch to the HST six-cylinder Range Rover Sport gas MHEV model if you can, as it offers the 395-hp mild-hybrid powertrain, a 19-speaker Meridian audio system, and a sliding panoramic sunroof, among other features. The Drive Pro Pack adds several missing driver-assistance features while still squeezing in under $89,000. The plug-in hybrid delivers a 19-mile EV range and charging it overnight at home makes it a great commuting option.
