Even the base six-cylinder Land Rover Range Rover's performance and 0-60 acceleration are perfectly adequate, with the slowest LWB derivative still able to hit the mark in 5.8 seconds. The SWB does it in 5.5 seconds and the SWB PHEV in 5.7 seconds. The V8s are quite a lot faster, varying from 4.4 to 4.6 seconds for the benchmark sprint. Top speed is of academic importance in a large luxury SUV like this but for what it's worth, it's 150 mph for the six-cylinder models, 140 mph for the PHEV, 155 mph for the SE and Autobiography V8s, and 162 mph for the SV V8s. The base six-cylinder mild-hybrid powertrain is extremely refined, impressively fuel-efficient, and powerful enough for most people, but the V8 is the one to pick if you want effortless power and want to make full use of the Rangey's maximum trailering capacity of 8,200 lbs. Six-cylinders can tow around 500 lbs less but work harder doing so.
The base engine in the Land Rover Range Rover is a 3.0L turbocharged inline six with mild-hybrid assistance and which is good for 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. A plug-in hybrid version of this powertrain with 434 hp and 457 lb-ft is available too. V8 models use a BMW-sourced 4.4L twin-turbocharged engine with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft. All Range Rovers come with standard four-wheel drive and they share the same eight-speed automatic transmission. Land Rover will reportedly relegate some of the four-wheel-drive system's features to a dedicated off-road package and no longer offer them as standard, to give buyers a choice, but it is yet to provide details and pricing on it.

As you would expect from a big SUV nearing 6,000 pounds, EPA estimates for the Range Rover's gas mileage and mpg figures aren't stellar. Despite variances in length and weight, all P400 trims get the same 18/26/21 mpg EPA estimates for the city/highway/combined cycles. These are decent figures for the class, trailing the mild-hybrid 3.0-liter BMW X7 xDrive40i by just 1 mpg on the combined cycle, while being 1 mpg ahead of the Mercedes GLS 450. As expected, the V8s are rather thirsty with their estimates of 16/21/18 mpg. With a fuel capacity of 23.8 gallons, the P400s have a range of up to 500 miles on a tank and the P530s up to 428 miles.
At the time of writing, EPA estimates for the P440e PHEV were not available, but it is expected to be the most efficient variant of all, and Land Rover has claimed an all-electric range of around 50 miles for this model. It supports 50-kW DC rapid charging, and its battery can be recharged up to 80% in less than an hour.

Among the normal gas Range Rovers, the P400 models are the most efficient and they all share EPA estimates of 18/26/21 mpg for the city/highway/combined cycles. The P440 PHEV, which we review separately, should be significantly more efficient, but at the time of writing, official EPA estimates weren't available for it yet.
Both the 3.0L and 4.4L engines in the Range Rover require Premium gas.
