2023 Air Interior

Lucid understands that technology and luxury are not the same things. Technology contributes to that luxurious feel, but only if it improves the ownership experience.

Allow us to demonstrate with the humble keyless entry feature. It's a simple piece of technology, yet it allows you to stroll right up to the car, open the door, and start it without fishing around for your keys. That's luxury. Luxury is also air, light, and space. In those departments, the Air is magnificent. It has all the latest technology and several screens, but they don't dominate the interior. Instead, it's the quality of the materials and the light that filters in via the large windscreen-cum-glass-roof that stretches over the front passenger seats.

Being a new EV company, you would have expected Lucid to take the same buttonless approach as Tesla. But we're happy to report that you do get physical buttons for the most-used features.

Seating and Interior Space

As standard, the Lucid Air seats five, but an Executive Rear Seating Package will be available that reduces this to four with a full-length center console and fully-reclining rear seats. Having a flat floor with no running gear running through the center allowed the designers to create a larger interior. In fact, starting from scratch allowed the Lucid team to sculpt the battery pack to its exact specifications. That's one of the great things about not relying on third-party suppliers.

The front legroom and headroom are 45.4 inches and 39.5 inches, respectively. The rear three-seat bench has 38.3 inches of headroom and 37.6 inches of legroom, although the latter drops to 36.6 inches with the Long Range battery. The headroom figures are applicable to the Glass Canopy roof; the Pure's conventional aluminum roof renders slightly different headroom figures, front and rear: 39.6 and 37.8 inches, respectively.

But these figures alone do not accurately represent the feeling of space. Thanks to that sublime full-glass canopy roof, even if you go for the somber full black interior, there's always enough light in the cabin to keep that feeling of claustrophobia at bay. The rear reclining seats also feel wonderfully spacious.

Interior Colors and Materials

The base Pure comes standard with a Mojave theme: PurLuxe Leather Alternative in Lucid Black and Graphite with Obsidian inserts. It's the only available option, and you have to spend more to unlock the three Nappa options in the Touring and Grand Touring.

In Touring and Grand Touring models you can select between three interior themes. Santa Cruz comes with Nappa full-grain and premium natural-grain leather in Lucid Black and Ceramic, with North American Walnut trim. Tahoe comes with Nappa full-grain and premium natural-grain leather in Lucid Black and Saddle Brown with Carbon Oak trim. Mojave gives you the same leather interior, but in Lucid Black and Graphite with Carbon Oak trim. Lucid says the Grand Touring will be available with the Mojave theme in PurLuxe leatherette as well from the second quarter of 2023.

The three available selections on the upper trims are included in the price, and there's no need to pay extra.

2023 Air Trunk and Cargo Space

Once again, we see the benefit of doing absolutely everything in-house instead of designing a car around existing third-party technology. In no way is this more easily shown than by comparing the Lucid Air's trunk space to that of its most traditional rival, the Mercedes S-Class. The latter has a larger footprint, yet the trunk only has 13.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Even the Mercedes EQS only has 22 cubic feet, and it doesn't have a frunk. On paper, you'd think the Air is only average here, as its trunk boasts 22.1 cubic feet. But that's only half the story. Thanks to the exterior design, the trunk lid is massive. The distance from the ground to the trunk is much lower than you'd expect, making it easy to load stuff. Thanks to the wide-opening lid and flat floor, you can also load large objects with ease, especially thanks to split-folding rear seats that let the Air swallow up surfboards. Then there's the frunk, which boasts a capacity of ten cubic feet - an industry-leading figure.

Inside the cabin, storage is abundant. Yes, you get standard bits and bobs like large door pockets and a glovebox, but there's more. The infotainment screen can stow away in the dash to reveal a massive storage bin under the floating dash. Then a sliding cover on the center console reveals a pair of cupholders and another large bin. Lift up the large armrest and there's yet more storage, with a top tray to help you separate your belongings. Climb into the back and there are pockets on the back of the front seats, a storage bin between the front seats, and a fold-out armrest from the center rear seat.

2023 Air Infotainment and Features

Features

Lucid offers an impressive baseline standard specification for all the driving and charging components. All models come standard with adaptive suspension, DC fast charging, and onboard AC charging. The Pure comes with faux two-tone leather, automatic climate control, navigation, three years of free charging, and hardware that can be updated via over-the-air updates.

Lucid is working on a more advanced autonomous driving package, but for now, DreamDrive is standard. This safety suite includes blind-spot monitoring with a dedicated blind-spot camera, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, attention warning, and an automated parking system. All of these features can be updated via over-the-air updates as well.

Lucid is decidedly secretive about what features are standard or available, so knowing what adjustment, heating, ventilation, and more each trim has is tricky. But some of the cool features include the full glass roof available on the Touring and standard on the Grand Touring, while for rear-seat luxury, an Executive Rear Seat package gives you reclining perches that mimic business class airline seating.

Infotainment

Every Lucid comes standard with a 34-inch 5K Glass Cockpit Display. It doesn't dominate the interior thanks to low-key tasteful graphics. The driving details are in the center, controls to the left, and navigation/infotainment information to the right. Easy, simple, neat.

If you want to do a deep dive, Lucid also includes a retractable Pilot Panel. This panel houses expanded functions for navigation, audio, and climate controls. You can also control all of these features via the smartphone app before you set off, and it will automatically send instructions to the car.

The Lucid currently comes standard with Amazon Alexa, which you can use to control almost everything. Lucid is working hard at making the Air's software compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Lucid has promised that these features, as well as compatibility with countless other apps, will be uploaded via over-the-air updates.

The sound system is spectacular, however, packing 21 Dolby Atmos speakers into the cabin to create 'Surreal Sound' paired with an 800-watt dual amplifier.
