The 2021 Maserati Levante Trofeo is one of those cars: a first-generation Super SUV. The Levante isn't a bad SUV, and we have always enjoyed its smooth Italian styling, but the Trofeo version brings some big power numbers to the game. This Italian stud is motivated by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo Ferrari-derived V8 gas engine, which produces 580 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque. We love its sleek looks, high performance, and a long list of standard features, but is it enough to ward off the likes of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Mercedes-AMG GLE 63?

For the 2021 model year, the Maserati Levante Trofeo gets new taillight clusters and a revised grille with a new trident design. On the inside, the 8.4-inch infotainment system remains the same but with higher-resolution graphics. Maserati says this new screen creates a visual effect that makes it look like a single curved screen with air vents cut into it. The instrument cluster now has a redesigned look to it. We're more pleased with the latest software package, based on Google's Android Automotive. It now has a virtual assistant, better navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The final upgrade is the addition of a wireless charging pad.

The USA is littered with fast and capable SUVs, but the 2021 Levante Trofeo brings something different and more exclusive to the table: Italian flair. It might not be the most practical or technically advanced in its group, but it makes up for it in charisma.

On the road, this Maserati SUV is not as good to drive as its other European competitors; in fact, it's downright bad, and the apparent parts-sharing inside the cabin with other Stellantis siblings is a slap in the face when you consider the price Maserati is asking for this vehicle. The good news is that the Levante Trofeo is insanely quick, looks good, and sounds even better. The Ferrari-sourced engine adds bragging rights and reliability, and there's a solid amount of standard features, tech, although no available safety rating might concern some safety-conscious buyers. The most significant issue about the 2021 Maserati Levante Trofeo SUV is its price. At $153,200, this super SUV costs just $10,000 less than the excellent Bentley Bentayga, will the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, which is just as good of a driver's car, costs around $70,000 less.
