2022 Mazda CX-9 Review: The Family SUV Prom King

While it may be receiving a new trim and a standard all-wheel-drive setup, the 2022 Mazda CX-9 is essentially the same vehicle it has always been. The three-row midsize SUV continues to be one of the best-looking and driving vehicles in the segment, but whereas it was once a clear leader, it now faces stiffer competition than ever before from the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade - the Mazda CX-9's primary competitors. Powertrain-wise, those are conservative by comparison to the CX-9, with Mazda opting for a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium fuel. Performance is one of the Mazda SUV's strong points, and this carries through to the new year, with standard AWD ensuring optimum traction and handling in all conditions. It may be down on space compared to other three-row offerings, but a luxurious interior, lithe chassis, and punchy engine make the CX-9 one of the strongest choices for family shoppers.

What's the Price of the 2022 Mazda CX-9?

The price of the Mazda CX-9 is a weak point in comparison to the competition. The entry-level Sport model has an MSRP of $35,280. Upgrading to the Touring trim isn't a big leap, as it retails for $37,430. The Touring Plus model asks for $41,660, while the Carbon Edition represents a big leap in price at $43,580. The Grand Touring retails for $44,440, while the top-spec Signature retails for $47,210. These prices exclude the $1,225 destination charge.

2022 Mazda CX-9 Handling and Driving Impressions

Mazda is known for designing some of the most fun-to-drive cars around, and despite its size, the CX-9 still fits the bill. That's not to say you should expect Miata levels of engaging dexterity, no matter what the automaker may try to tell you, but the midsize SUV is deceptively sporty. The light and precise steering helps to make the car feel much smaller than it is, while a well-tuned suspension means that it maintains its composure during spirited driving.

At the same time, comfort is clearly a priority, as it should be in a car designed to haul around large groups of people. Large bumps may still upset the cabin but smaller ones are absorbed with ease. Similarly, wind and road noise are minimal when puttering around town, but they do intrude into the otherwise serene interior when you pick up the pace. In review, the Mazda CX-9 is a well-balanced package that refuses to make any serious compromises in performance, comfort, or driveability.

Verdict: Is The 2022 Mazda CX-9 A Good SUV?

Thanks to their Goldilocks quality of being "just right", midsize SUVs are some of the most popular cars in the USA. They are still small enough to feel at home around town and on busy streets, but more than big enough to house a full family and their stuff. However, many automakers who try to cram a third row of seats fail to do so in a practical way, and the CX-9 falls within this category. It is best used as a five-seater, with the rear-most seats folded down to provide a decent 38.2 cubic feet of cargo space. But the fact that you can cram in up to seven passengers in a pinch is a nice bonus that many consumers appreciate.

Other strengths include extremely stylish good looks, surprisingly spry handling dynamics, a competent powertrain, and a whole lot of desirable standard features. But with all that said, the CX-9 doesn't lead the segment as a top value proposition. Both the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade make more sense as three-row SUVs, and they each have a lower starting price, too. But, if having fun and looking good matter to you, a new Mazda CX-9 SUV is definitely worth considering.

What New Mazda CX-9 SUV Should I Buy?

CarBuzz tested a decked-out Signature trim, which essentially comes fully loaded for $47,210. If you can afford this model, with its abundance of technology and sumptuous Nappa leather seating, it's the one we'd recommend. But if the Signature is out of your price range, the Touring model seems like a nice value for $37,430. From there, Soul Red Metallic is a no-brainer option for $595, as it makes the CX-9 look more luxurious in person. The Touring Premium Package is a worthy $2,080 addition as are the no-cost captain's chairs. All-in, you can buy a generously-equipped Mazda CX-9 for a cost of just over $40k.
