The Tribute is really just a rebadged Ford Escape, but without so many features. Hopefully this explains why it really just doesn’t quite work. There was a time when this was just the right sort of compact crossover, but carmakers have been giving increasing amounts of attention to this segment, and the Tribute now feels thoroughly outdated. It has been greatly improved since the last generation, but it retains far too much of the original’s truckishness to be competitive. It isn’t a bad drive, this is a still a Mazda, but this isn’t much of an enthusiasts’ segment, and there are other vehicles which can offer so much more.
