The GLE Coupe has been haunting the USA with its awkward styling for six years now, even with the all-new 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe replacing the third-generation Mercedes-AMG GLE 43. Mercedes-AMG has done its very best to improve the styling of this midsize luxury coupe SUV, but in all fairness, it's still ugly as sin, and we think the poor thing must be going through a constant identity crisis. So it is not entirely a coupe, and it's not a practical 5-door SUV, but at least it can go fast. The GLE 53 Coupe is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 coupled with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system producing 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque. It does battle the BMW X6 and Porsche Cayenne Coupe for the title of "most useless fast German luxury cars or whatever."
The GLE 53 Coupe is an all-new model this year and is based on the popular GLE SUV. This coupe SUV replaces the Mercedes-AMG GLE 43 and offers lightning performance from its inline-six turbocharged motor and enough space to carry all of your shopping or holiday gear. It makes use of a combination of gas and hybrid technology. Highlights on the 2021 vehicle include improved aerodynamics, the latest MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system, and AMG Ride Control and air suspension for variable adjustable damping.

Powering this amorphous mass of German steel is a turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The inline-six provides 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque with another 184 lb-ft of torque from the EQ Boost electric motor. Power is channeled to the all-wheel drivetrain via a 9-speed automatic transmission. Despite its curb weight of 4,960 lbs, the 2021 GLE 53 Coupe will dash to 60 mph in only 5.2 seconds, making it four-tenths of a second quicker than the old GLE 43. No official towing capacity rating has been announced by the manufacturer.
NHTSA safety ratings are not available at this time.
We like to give the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe a bit of a hard time, especially since it looks like someone took a regular Merc SUV and threw it in a trash compactor and then hit its rear-end with the ugliest stick you've ever seen, but all of that trash talk melts away as soon as one gets behind the steering wheel. The interior of the GLE 53 SUV is typical of Mercedes-AMG; it's sporty but deliciously refined and tasteful. All the tech features are up to scratch too, and the MBUX infotainment system is easy to get along with. This is reassuring, because there is no official safety rating review of the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53. In terms of performance, the GLE 53 SUV is punchy in a straight line, but it handles deceptively well for such a large car. Yes, it's ugly, but boy, does it drive like a dream.
If we were buying, we'd get one in black to hide as many of those unsightly body lines as possible. While we're at it, we'd just murder it out with the AMG night package and a set of $3,250 22-inch AMG cross-spoke matte black wheels. On the inside, we'd go for the classic red, and black Nappa leather interior for $2,900 (as well as the $350 topstitched MB-Tex trim) and the $850 designo Flamed Ashwood trim. As far as optional tech goes, we'd get the $1,950 Driver Assistance Package Plus, which adds driver aids such as evasive steering assist, active brake assist, and route-based speed adaptation. For added performance and presence, we'd also get the AMG performance exhaust system for an additional $1,250.The total price of a 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe with this build comes to $90,940, including a $1,050 destination fee.
