2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe Review: Hard-Hitting Hunchback

by Michael Butler

Manufacturers seem to want to fill every nook and cranny of the market with some sort of niche offering, and the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe is the perfect example. This car is part SUV, part coupe, and part muscle car, but the question is, is it good at being any of those? The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe's competitors in the USA include the BMW X6 M and Porsche Cayenne Turbo Coupe, both brilliant cars in their own right. The GLE 63 has won our favor in the past thanks to its overwhelmingly brutal performance and luxurious interior, but we're still unsure if this car even needs to exist. Then again, perhaps that 4.0-liter AMG V8 making 603 horsepower is as good a reason as any, especially since Merc's V8 will gradually be phased out. The V8 will launch this heavy SUV to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds, making a glorious roar as it does so. In our Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe review, we find a vehicle that will easily keep up with its BMW arch rival but with the opulence and grandeur Merc fans seem to crave.

2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe Changes: What’s The Difference vs The 2021 AMG GLE 63 Coupe?

For the 2022 model year, the GLE 63 Coupe is mechanically unchanged but can now be specified in Cirrus Silver paint. Adaptive highbeam assist is now standard, and the interior can be upgraded with two new options: Air Balance and multicontour front seats with massage.

Pros and Cons

  • Massive power
  • Looks sportier than normal AMG GLE
  • Luxurious interior
  • Still a fairly practical SUV
  • Predictable handling
  • Sloping roofline compromises rear headroom and cargo space
  • The normal GLE is just as fast and more practical
  • What fuel economy?

What's the Price of the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe?

With the price of the AMG GLE 63 Coupe starting at $117,850 - an MSRP that excludes a $1,050 destination charge - the performance and style don't come cheap. The SUV version, for example, costs $1,000 less.

Be cautious when it comes to the options, however. It's easy to go over budget with so many of the advanced assists left to the options list.

Handling and Driving Impressions

Get behind the wheel of the 2022 GLE 63 Coupe, and it becomes clear that this vehicle is more SUV than sports car. In its most comfortable driving mode, the GLE 63 Coupe soaks up bumps with aplomb and feels like the perfect daily cruiser. Switch it up to Sports mode, and things become sharper, including the suspension. The car becomes more sensitive to steering inputs, and that powerful V8 starts to bark a bit louder. This performance crossover isn't the lightest thing on four wheels, and pushing too hard reveals its hefty curb weight, but for what it is, we were left thoroughly impressed. It's easy to control at the limit and there's an abundance of grip on offer, which makes this car especially potent at corner exits. The braking system is also insanely good and expertly shrugs off the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe SUV's weight. The Porsche Cayenne Turbo Coupe remains a more dynamic option and shrinks around the driver in a fashion that the Merc can't quite replicate, but for AMG fans, there is a lot to like here.

Verdict: Is the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe A Good SUV?

The US car market is filled with all kinds of absurdities, and the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe is one of them. This amorphous piece of expensive German metal will have most scratching their heads. What is it exactly, and what is its purpose? The thing is, this car is good at quite a few things. It's practical enough to act as a premium school bus and grocery-getter and fast enough to embarrass the living hell out of most traditional sports cars. The sloping body style slightly impedes practicality, and the GLE 63 just makes more sense, but this car adds a bit of style to the equation. We get it. Those buying in this corner of the market will do so out of passion, with cargo space and fuel economy figures a distant thought.

What 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe Model Should I Buy?

There's only one model to choose from, but endless ways to customize it. We played around with the online configurator and specced a GLE 63 S Coupe as we would have it. This included Cardinal Red paint coupled with 22-inch matte black wheels and the AMG Night Package. On the inside, we went for red/black Nappa seats and the AMG Performance steering wheel with Carbon Fiber inserts. We selected massaging seats, four-zone climate control, the high-end Burmester sound system, and the AMG head-up display from the standalone options. The Driver Assistance Package is a must, as is the high-performance ceramic braking system. In a 5,000-lbs car with 600+ hp, you need all the brakes. The total came to $140,610, including the destination charge.
