2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe Review: Electrified Luxury

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe is one of the few Mercs to not have to contend with a direct competitor from archrivals BMW and Audi. The BMW 8 Series Coupe is positioned at a price point closer to the S-Class Coupe, while the Audi A5 Coupe is smaller and more affordable. However, even if these competitors did offer a direct alternative, we think the E-Class Coupe would have a good chance of coming out on top - it's that good. Last year, it received a new inline-six turbocharged engine with EQ Boost, upgraded tech, and new looks. In the best E-Class tradition, the coupe is a beautifully refined cruiser and the ritzy interior is comparable to cars costing a lot more. There are more powerful AMG versions that we review separately, but the more laidback powertrain in the E450 suits the character of this coupe to a tee.

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe Changes: What’s the Difference vs the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe?

After last year's substantial upgrades in terms of powertrain configuration, almost nothing changes for the 2022 model. There are a few more paint options, including Starling Blue Metallic, as well as Manufaktur Moonlight White. Notably, all models also now get Adaptive Highbeam Assist as standard. Last year, this feature was bundled with the Mercedes LED Intelligent Light System in the $900 Exterior Lighting Package. With auto high beams now standard, the intelligent lighting is still available, but as a standalone option. Both models' MSRPs have increased by $1,150.

Pros and Cons

  • Classy styling
  • Efficient powertrain
  • Fast enough for most
  • Sumptuous, high-quality cabin
  • Relaxing driving experience
  • Advanced safety features
  • Expensive options
  • Fussy new steering-wheel controls
  • Not especially sporty handling, if that's what you want

What's the Price of the New Mercedes E-Class Luxury Coupe?

In RWD form, the 2022 Mercedes E-Class Coupe carries an MSRP of $66,100. The 4Matic variant goes for a slightly costlier $68,600 in the USA. Both of these prices exclude tax, licensing, registration, and a US destination charge of $1,050. The sky's the limit when it comes to options, though, and the price of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe will climb to over $90,000 including destination with all the boxes ticked. At that price, you may as well get an S-Class. Among other luxurious coupes that are for sale, the BMW 8 Series begins at $85,000 and the much more athletic Jaguar F-Type starts at $69,900 - with a 444-hp V8 engine as standard.

Handling and Driving Impressions

A lowered ride height is intended to give the E-Class Coupe a slightly sportier feel on the road than the sedan. While it achieves this to an extent with precise and well-weighted steering, there's no getting away from the fact that this is a heavy coupe that prefers to go for long, high-speed cruises. With the Dynamic Select controller switched to Comfort mode, the E450 soaks up bumps and surface changes with all the composure you'd expect of a Mercedes-Benz. The optional adaptive air suspension improves the ride quality even further, and it's really only badly scarred surfaces that unsettle the coupe. As a relaxing commuter, the E450 really excels - the refined powertrain and quiet cabin take the stress out of jaunts to the office and back. If you want something a bit sharper, the pricier 8 Series could be a better option or even one of Merc's own AMGs, but the E450 is wonderfully tuned for its intended purpose.

Verdict: Is the 2022 Model Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe A Good Car?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe is, for lack of a better term, a class act. The improvements that were made last year equate to an even better product that is just as fast and refined but even more efficient thanks to the smooth integration of the 48-volt system. We love how it wafts down the road with confidence; it's not an overtly sporty machine but neither is it trying to be. While we do have some reservations about the infotainment system's controls, we expect that most owners will soon find their own favored way of interacting with MBUX. Yes, rear-seat space and cargo capacity pale alongside the E-Class Sedan, but that car doesn't invite as many admiring glances as this one, and isn't that what a coupe is all about?

What Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe Model Should I Buy?

The E450 and E450 4Matic are identical other than their drivetrains, so the choice will come down to whether you need the security of an AWD system or not. We'd go for the AWD model since it barely takes a knock in terms of efficiency and is faster. Some of the other options we'd add include 19-inch wheels (which require the $2,500 AMG Line package), the Driver Assistance Package with adaptive cruise control and much more ($1,700), and the head-up display which goes for $1,100. Anything more, and the price starts to become overly inflated.

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe vs Audi A5 Coupe

Audi doesn't have a direct rival to the E-Class Coupe but the Audi A5 is another premium and stylish two-door that may tempt some buyers. The base A5 costs $45,600, but prospective E-Class Coupe buyers would probably consider the S5 at $53,900 instead. The latter model can be had in Prestige trim to get somewhat closer to the E450's price. This Audi is quicker thanks to its lighter weight and 349-hp V6, taking 4.4 seconds to reach 60 mph. It comes with a head-up display and a Bang & Olufsen sound system so is well-stocked with desirable features. The base A5 gets a 261-hp turbo-four but isn't actually much slower than the Mercedes. While the Audi is a lovely coupe and offers a comfortable drive, it lacks the grandeur of the E-Class. The Merc simply feels more special to look at and to drive.

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe vs BMW 8 Series Coupe

The 8 Series Coupe is a closer match for the S-Class Coupe, but it actually stacks up well against the E-Class Coupe in terms of size. At a starting price of $85,000 for the base 840i RWD, it's very expensive but does come with heated everything (front seats, armrests, and steering wheel), 16-way power front seats, and a head-up display. The Bimmer's straight-six is legendary and provides even swifter acceleration than in the E-Class while rewarding the keener driver with sharper responses. However, the Mercedes has a much more stylish interior and is less cramped for rear-seat passengers. There's also the feeling that the 8 Series simply comes off as a bigger 4 Series, whereas the E-Class Coupe feels like a mildly shrunken S-Class Coupe. Considering the price difference, the E-Class with a few tasty options seems like the better deal.
