2023 EQS Sedan Interior

If the EQS Sedan is to live up to its billing as an electric S-Class, then it needs an abundance of refinement, luxury, and space. It falls short on the latter, particularly in the rear seats, but it's still a spacious sedan. technology is abundant, but the much-spoken-about Hyperscreen is only standard on the EQS 580, with lesser trims making do with two traditional screens for infotainment and instrumentation. We'd argue that the Hyperscreen detracts from the feeling of luxury and that tech does not equal luxury, but time will tell whether this is truly the case. However, the materials all feel up to scratch, and the fit and finish speaks to Mercedes' status as a legacy manufacturer compared to the quality levels seen in newer upstarts proclaiming to compete in the same category.

Seating and Interior Space

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan seats five adults across two rows. Despite being billed as a full-size luxury sedan, the rear-seat legroom doesn't let you stretch out fully. While a six-footer will have enough space, the 38 inches of headroom is tight for anyone taller, and the undisclosed legroom is only fine, not stellar. Those in front are not found wanting, however, with 40.4 inches of headroom and 41.7 inches of legroom. 12-way power-adjustable front seats have both heating and ventilation as standard and three-position memory to account for multiple driver profiles. Optionally, you can spec front sport seats, but we'd steer clear and rather spec the multi-contour massage seats for the best experience.

Interior Colors and Materials

While many other manufacturers offer premium alternatives to traditional leather upholstery, Mercedes raises a proud middle finger to animal lovers. The electric EQS Sedan is exclusively available with leather seats, with the option of regular leather or sumptuous Nappa leather in various two-tone combinations. Black and Space Grey, Macchiato Beige and Space Grey, Neva Grey and Sable Brown, and Black and Sable Brown round out the standard choices. The former three can be specced with Nappa leather at $1,370, while Neva Grey/Sable Brown and Black/Space Grey can be had with the AMG sport seats, the latter offering red contrast stitching. Upper-spec sub-trims also avail a Manufaktur option of Neva Grey/Biscaya Blue.

Trim options include the cool-looking backlit laser-cut star pattern, natural grain Anthracite Linden wood, Brown Walnut wood, and the $1,515 Natural Grain Yacht-design Brown Walnut wood. Another interesting option is the $540 Anthracite 3D Relief-optic, with a textured diamond pattern. However, the center console is dominated by piano black that will show up every smudge.

2023 EQS Sedan Trunk and Cargo Space

Large car means large trunk, right? Not so fast. Like the S-Class, the priority in the EQS is passenger space, but that doesn't mean you're shortchanged. 22 cubic feet behind the rear seats is pretty decent for the segment, but being a liftback rather than a traditional sedan has its benefits, as the rear seats fold in a 40/20/40 split to open up 63 cubic feet. If that sounds ample, it is, but then again, the EQS doesn't get a frunk like the Lucid Air and Tesla Model S do.

Standard interior storage is ample with large door pockets, cupholders in the front and rear, a decent-sized glovebox, and a large storage bin beneath the front armrest. A party trick afforded by the lack of a transmission tunnel is a large open storage area underneath the center console.

2023 EQS Sedan Infotainment and Features

Features

Standard Mercedes features abound in the EQS's interior, with the standard inclusion of a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats with 12-way power operation and three-position memory, dual-zone automatic climate control, 64-color ambient lighting, and keyless entry with keyless start. You can up-spec most items, however, with four-zone climate control available, multicontour front seats that massage you as you go, scented air purification, heated, power-adjustable rear seats, meck heating, and more.

Driver assistance isn't forgotten about with more active assists than you can count in one go. Every park sensor, crash sensor, collision avoidance measure, and assist - be it lane-keeping, lane-changing, blind-spot, evasive steering, and more, with options in this regard limited to a dashcam and little else.

Infotainment

Every Mercedes EQS review will likely tell you how the 56-inch Hyperscreen is to use, but we're here to tell you that you won't get that as standard in the base models. Instead, you'll get two standalone digital displays, one measuring 12.3 inches behind the steering wheel and another on the center console measuring 12.8 inches. the MBUX operating system is standard, however, so voice command, touch control, a few basic hard buttons (too basic in our experience), and steering wheel controls give you a plethora of ways to access the multitude of features like the wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, HD Radio, SiriusXM, and online navigation. A Burmester sound system is standard with 710 watts and 15 speakers, and amenities like wireless charging are too.

The EQS 580 gets the big 56-inch system, and we're not massive fans. The central screen is swapped for a portrait-oriented touchscreen measuring 17.7 inches, while the passenger gains an additional 12.3-inch touchscreen.

On the options list, you can get a head-up display, an augmented reality head-up display, or w Wi-Fi hotspot. You can also spec wireless charging for the rear occupants and a rear tablet that docks into the central armrest.
