2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Review: There's Plenty Of Fish In The Sea

It may have just received a highly stylized makeover, but the fact remains that under the skin, the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport has been around for nearly a decade in the US in its current third-generation form. But the new year brings with it new opportunities, along with a new front-end design, new alloy wheels, improved interior materials, and an upgraded infotainment system. Unfortunately, these new updates fail to bring the CUV up to the level of compact competitors such as the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V, which both offer a superior overall package. Under the hood, the top-of-the-line GT Outlander Sport houses a 2.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine producing a mild 168 horsepower and 167 lb-ft of torque. Power delivery and overall performance are disappointing, but the Outlander Sport SUV makes up for this with a low starting price. In a class this competitive, though, Mitsusbishi has missed the mark.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Changes: 🚙What’s the difference vs. 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport?

The Outlander Sport has been around in its current form since 2011 but has gone through its fair share of updates and redesigns since. For 2020 several significant changes occur inside and outside; gone is the homely body shape, which is replaced by contemporary angles and creases, most notably at the front end. The Outlander Sport also rides on a set of new 18-inch alloy wheels and gains a set of LED headlights, taillights, and daytime running lights. Inside, the Sport gets new high-quality fabric, new climate control buttons, a few trim-specific standard features; the infotainment display grows from seven to eight inches and offers more advanced connectivity. Mitsubishi also introduces new exterior colors Red Diamond, Sunshine Orange, and Oak Brown to the 2020 Outlander Sport lineup.

Engine and Transmission

Unlike many of its competitors who offer turbo power, a review of the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport range yields bad news in this regard: it's only available with two naturally aspirated motors. The base model is powered by a 2.0-liter MIVEC double-overhead camshaft inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine producing 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. This engine feels lethargic and needs to be revved high to produce any notable results. The GT trim is offered with a 2.4-liter inline-4 that produces a more notable 168 hp and 167 lb-ft, but the Outlander Sport still manages to feel underpowered, even with the higher-output engine. Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive systems are available, with power directed by a CVT transmission. Forget about top speed stats; just be happy to get this up to cruising speeds and call it a day.

Verdict: 🏁Is the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport a good SUV?

Mitsubishi has tried to mask the Outlander Sport's age with a few significant updates in 2020, including a younger-looking face, improved interior materials, and even an upgraded infotainment system, but it simply is not enough to mask this crossover SUV's age. It has been around since 2011, and in that period, its competitors have swiftly moved ahead with lightweight turbocharged engines that offer more power and use less fuel and chassis and suspension setups that make the Outlander Sport feel like a farm tractor. On the inside, space is limited, and we still found that the material quality wasn't up to class-leading standards. Mitsubishi USA sells the Outlander at an attractive price, and reliability and safety ratings aren't all that bad, but rival vehicles only cost a few bucks more and offer a more complete driving experience.

🚗What 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Model Should I Buy?

The price of the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport SUV is dangerously close to its more accomplished rivals, so going for a top-of-the-line model with all the bells and whistles will mean that you'll be paying more than accomplished cars such as the Honda CR-V. For that reason, we'd suggest going with the ES, which will set you back $44,595. This model gets basic tech such as Bluetooth, and in AWD guise, is a mildly competent off-road partner. Don't worry about adding optional extras; the ES has all the bases covered.
