The PRO-4X is the most off-road capable of all the Frontier models. Bilstein shock absorbers are fitted to improve ride comfort and increase articulation. A rear limited-slip differential is included on this trim, so you’ll make light work of any axle twisters out there, too. The transfer case allows changing between 2WD and 4WD on the move, which is handy when an asphalt road suddenly turns into loose gravel. While the RWD model is excellent on gravel thanks to a capable traction- and stability control system, the 4WD high-range setting is much more sure-footed. The low-range gearing is perfectly tuned for technical off-roading. Considering the PRO-4X’s additional weight, it doesn’t even carry that much of a fuel consumption penalty, because the standard 4x4 is only one mpg thirstier on the combined cycle than a PRO-X with RWD.
