2024 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe First Look Review: The Best Of Both Worlds
What happens when iconic automaker Porsche wants to cash in on the SUV and crossover fad, still offer a stylish product, provide thrilling performance, and keep the gas bills low? You get the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe, which is literally a combination of all the above aims. The recipe has clearly worked because the Cayenne Coupe in hybrid format has done well, thanks to its improved performance and fuel economy figures. For 2024, the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe gets a revised powertrain and a bigger battery, as well as the exterior makeover the rest of the range benefitted from. And inside, the E-Hybrid Coupe is availed with the excellent digital cockpit Porsche introduced in the Taycan. Of course, the main attraction is the new Turbo E-Hybrid Coupe that offers 729 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque; this is now the most powerful Cayenne you can buy, which only furthers our argument that the 2024 E-Hybrid Coupe range is where you should be shopping if you want a Cayenne.
When Is The 2024 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe Coming Out?
Order books for the new Cayenne range are already open, with the release date for the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe set for summer 2023 in the USA. The new Cayenne S E-Hybrid and Turbo E-Hybrid Coupe will make its appearance in dealerships in early 2024.
2024 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe Price And Competition
For 2024, the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe's price starts at $95,700, while the S E-Hybrid Coupe will cost $104,000. Topping the range, the Turbo E-Hybrid Coupe model begins at $151,400; this is MSRP and excludes a $1,650 delivery fee. While the base model shows a slight increase in price, the S E-Hybrid and Turbo E-Hybri Coupe have a lower cost than the 2023 Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupe - that model has a price tag of $173,800.
Rivals to the Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe are difficult to peg down since hybrid family haulers of this size are generally traditionally SUV-shaped. The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE Plug-In Hybrid looks boxier and makes less power, but it also comes at a cheaper price in the $75k region. The BMW X6 M60i is closer in looks (or shape, rather), but it makes over 520 hp from just a combustion engine only. It goes on sale for around $93k, which is still less money than Porsche asks for.
New Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe Exterior And Colors
As with the rest of the Porsche Cayenne lineup, the E-Hybrid Coupe exterior is substantially updated, with a front end showing off new fenders, a new hood, and fresh headlight styling. The light clusters up front feature high-definition LED Matrix designs. At the rear end, the stylish coupe-like roofline offers a much sleeker parting view than the boxier SUV sibling to the Cayenne Coupe, and features a brand-new rear fascia with the rear light bar now a solid, three-dimensional design that is bolder than on the outgoing model.
The new Cayenne S E-Hybrid Coupe comes with a Black Exterior Package as standard. Setting the Turbo E-Hybrid Coupe apart are much larger cooling air intakes and black airblades in the front fascia, as well as model-specific wheel arch trims and a rear bumper finished in matching paintwork to the rest of the coupe. There are twin brushed stainless steel tailpipes protruding at the rear, and while the base model rides on 20-inch wheels, the more potent version gets 21-inch items. Red brake calipers can be seen on the Turbo. A whole new range of designs is made available for 2024, including 21- and 22-inch designs in various colors. An optional Lightweight Sport Package is available for the E-Hybrid Coupe range, which saves up to 72 pounds of weight. As expected from Porsche, here are numerous customization options for kitting out your E-Hybrid Coupe.
Turbo models can also be had with the GT Package, which not only tweaks performance from under the hood, but adds blacked-out exterior accents, carbon side plates on the roof spoiler, a carbon rear diffuser and lightweight roof, as well as a titanium exhaust system. All Turbo E-Hybrid models feature upgraded HD-Matrix exterior lighting.
With regards to exterior colors the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe, Algarve Blue, Montego Blue, and Arctic Grey are added to the palette for 2024. As usual, Porsche Paint to Sample will be available.
Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe Dimensions
In terms of dimensions, the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe is longer than the SUV by a tenth of an inch at 194.1 inches over a 114-inch wheelbase. Width with the mirrors folded comes in at 78.6 inches (86.4 inches with mirror inclued) and it stands 65.9 inches in height - a little lower than its SUV sibling. Turbo E-Hybrid Coupe derivatives are a little taller at 66.4 inches.
Curb weight for the new Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe comes in at 5,415 pounds, a little heavier than the outgoing model, while the Turbo derivative hits the 5,719-pound mark.
Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe Engine And Performance
The 2024 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe engine setup is different this year, and the 3.0-liter V6 under the hood of the base E-Hybrid Coupe is turbocharged and supplemented with a new electric motor for total system outputs of 463 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The high-voltage battery is also new for 2024, upgraded to 25.9 kWh in capacity over the old 17.9-kWh unit. This should improve efficiency and range somewhat.
The older model lineup offered a Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupe with 670 hp, and Porsche has replaced it with a monster that makes more power than that still. For 2024, the Turbo E-Hybrid Coupe makes 729 hp and 700 lb-ft from its 4.0-liter hybrid V8 setup, which is enough to sprint to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. Adding the GT Package will improve this even further. Top speed is set at 183 mph.
The base E-Hybrid Coupe is no slouch, however, and will dispatch the 0-60 mph sprint in 4.6 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package equipped, and can reach a top speed of 158 mph when the wheels are wrapped in summer tires. But there's a Goldilocks model for those who want a bit more than what the base trim offers, but not quite as much as the Turbo E-Hybrid - the new Cayenne S E-Hybrid Coupe produces 512hp and 553 lb-ft from the hybrid V6 setup in the base model.
All E-Hybrid Coupe models come with a steel spring suspension, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), and new shock absorbers with two-valve technology as standard. The latter comes with separate rebound and compression stages that are designed to improve comfort during less spirited driving while enhancing cornering. Porsche says that pitch and roll have significantly improved as a result. Optional adaptive air suspension is available to sharpen driving precision and reduce body roll, and it's equipped as standard to the Turbo derivatives.
Exclusive to the Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid Coupe is the optional GT Package, borrowing performance features from the gas-powered Turbo GT. This package tunes the chassis and control systems, the suspension, and steering responses for a sportier drive. It also lowers the E-Hybrid Coupe by 0.4 inches and fits the high-performance Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake system.
Gas Mileage And Range
Official gas mileage figures haven't been released yet, but we can estimate mpg-equivalent figures based on what we know. The old model managed 46 MPGe and 21 mpg combined, according to the EPA, with a 17-mile all-electric range. The updated powertrain and bigger battery should see improvements in all these figures, although the new Turbo derivative's economy is still up in the air.
E-Hybrid Coupe models have a 19.8-gallon gas tank, and based on the old model, the hybrid Cayenne should be able to go for at least 440 miles. The Turbo version's gas tank is smaller, with a fuel capacity of 18.5 gallons.
Battery capacity and efficiency aren't all that's been improved, since the new hybrid comes with an 11-kW on-board AC charger that can get the battery to 100% faster than before.
Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe Interior And Cargo
One of the biggest talking points for the new Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe is what's been done to the inside: Not only do you still get the broad range of premium materials and features, but the cockpit layout is inspired by the Porsche Taycan. The Porsche Driver Experience combines a 12.6-inch screen for the instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch infotainment display, and an optional 10.9-inch display that can be mounted ahead of the front passenger. A head-up display is available to bolster the eyes-on-the-road focus of the new cockpit.
The setup also takes into account which controls and vehicle functions are used most often and places them on, or next to, the steering wheel. The gear selector sits on the dashboard, too, and there is a good balance of digital controls and physical dials and buttons. The infotainment system comes with all the needed tech to keep your Android or Apple phone connected and has popular apps like Spotify and Apple Music as standard. Media settings can even be controlled by the front passenger on their screen, if you tick the box for it, and it comes with a special layer that prevents the contents from distracting the driver.
The list of driver assists is impressive too, both standard and available, and includes active speed limit assist with traffic sign recognition when using cruise control. The adaptive cruise control system has been updated with two new functions, namely evasion assist and turn assist. Porsche InnoDrive will be on the options list, too, and will add optimized active lane keep and intersection assist.
Interior materials expectedly comprise leather upholstery with the upgrade to Club Leather available. Colors for the new Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe range include black or Black/Mojave Beige as standard, with pay-to-play combinations of black and Chalk, Bordeaux Red, Night Green, Blackberry, or Silver Houndstooth to choose from. Club Leather comes in Basalt Black with Cross-Stitching or Basalt Black with Barrique Red. Turbo models also get aluminum inlays inside the cabin and a Race-Tex roof lining, a heated GT sport steering wheel, a special mode selection switch that makes it easier to select your driving mode, and 18-way adjsutable seats.
Space for cargo in the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe is less than in the SUV version, with just 15.3 cubic feet behind the back row. This can be opened up to a maximum of 47.4 cubes with the seats folded down. The Turbo version offers more - 23.2 cubes to 47.4 cubes of trunk space is available on this model. With enough space inside for a couple of adults in the back, the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe seats a total of four in comfort, although you could opt to remove the rear seat armrest in favor of another seat.
