The 2017 Porsche Macan is now available with an improved base specification level which includes lane-departure waring and rearview camera as well as a new PCM system. A new 252 hp inline-4 kicks-off the line up while the Macan S retains its 340 hp V6, both are at or near their respective classes in performance terms. All models come standard with a 7-speed PDK transmission and all-wheel drive while handling remains tight but so too does rear passenger space and the cargo area. Optional extras are numerous and it is best sticking to one or two packages to keep costs contained.
When it comes to the Porsche Macan it is clear after the first few minutes behind the wheel that its focus is clearly on the Sport component of the modern SUV formula. It may have been out for a few years now but the Macan range continues to offer peerless driving dynamics and for 2017 there is a new base trim level as well as a welcome increase to the standard specification levels.
The solid Germanic interior offers comfortable if somewhat snug accommodation for four adults or five at a squeeze. The rear has never been particularly spacious and it continues to trail the competition in this regard. The dashboard layout now features an improved PCM touchscreen and while the centre console is still layered with buttons they make accessing commonly used functions a breeze.
The Macan falls short in the when it comes to the utility aspect of the modern SUV as the cargo space is not much better than you would find in a sports sedan and way off competitors from BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
The feeling of well-being can be further enhanced with a myriad of interior trim options allowing you to cover most of the cabin in leather of various hues if you so desire.
Even more than outright acceleration the core trait of any Porsche product should be an involving driving experience. Good news then that the Macan continues to be the class-leader in this regard. Even in base trim the Macan feels like a larger sports sedan rather than a high-riding SUV and as before all models come standard with a dual-clutch 7-speed PDK gearbox, automatic stop-start and all-wheel drive.
New for 2017 is an inline-4 turbocharged base model which goes to bat with 252 horsepower and a meaty 273 lb-ft of torque. This gives it a 0-60mph time of 6.3-seconds which is well above the class average.
The existing Macan S retains its 340 hp V6 power unit and with the optional Sport Chrono pack it completes the 60mph dash in a sports sedan flattening 5.0-seconds. It takes 5.2-seconds without it. The additional 66 lb-ft of torque over the base Macan can really be felt in-gear where the S responds with even more alacrity.
The changes for 2017 include an improvement in base specifications which now include lane-departure warning, parking sensors, rearview camera and Apple CarPlay is now standard with the improved PCM touchscreen system.
Thanks to a laundry list of desirable optional extras, a Macan’s base price is highly dependent on how restrained you are with ticking little boxes.
The base Macan comes standard with 18-inch wheels a power liftgate, 10-speaker sound system with 11GB digital music storage capability, auto wipers and parking sensors front and rear to name a few noteworthy items.
Other than the V6 engine, the Macan S gets 19-inch wheels, additional exterior trim options, larger brakes and a set of twin exhausts.
The options extend to adaptive cruise control, Porsche Torque Vectoring, Sport Chrono, upgraded speaker systems and a whole host of other tantalizing items. To simplify matters and keep costs down it may be worth picking from either the Premium Package which comes with heated seats, auto-dimming mirrors, BOSE sound and Dynamic Lights or the Premium Package + which adds Power Seats, seat ventilation, Panoramic roof and Porsche entry & drive.
A sports car in disguise, the Porsche Macan continues to offer superb performance and driving dynamics from two class-leading engines and features optional extras that allow you to customise to your hearts content. Just remember to pack light as the compact rear dimensions are as un-SUV like as the impressive performance.
