2021 Ram 2500 Review: Everyday Workhorse

With light- and heavy-duty pickup trucks still proving exceedingly popular in the USA, many automakers have been pumping out numerous new and improved versions of their trucks to compete in the thriving market. For 2021, the Ram 2500 continues in its fifth-generation guise but receives a few tweaks to its various models to keep it competitive. The entire line remains powered by a solid V8 unit, with 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque, that's brisk and smooth for pleasant and fairly efficient everyday driving. For leading hauling and towing proficiency, the Power Wagon, with its 370-hp, 850-lb-ft turbo-diesel 6-cylinder is the apex workhorse of the line, offering a leading 19,780-pound towing capacity. With Regular, Crew Cab, and Mega Cab 4-door configurations, as well as 6'4" short box and 8' long box cargo bed options, there's plenty of versatility and utility available within the Ram 2500 truck lineup. There's still a lot of favor for the Ford F-250HD in the USA, which leads car sales in the classification, but the 2021 Ram 2500's pleasant ride, spacious and comfortable interior, and workhorse capability certainly give the Ford a run for its money.

Verdict: Is the 2021 Ram 2500 A Good Pickup Truck?

With esteemed and well-established competitors such as the Ford F-250 and GMC Sierra 2500HD, Ram knew that it would have to go all-in with the latest 2500 model in order to keep it competitive and attractive within the immensely popular pickup truck segment. It certainly didn't hold back; the vehicle delivers powerful performance and utilitarian capabilities in a variety of compelling packages. The 2500 truck now measures up with the best of them and even boasts leading acceleration times and truly impressive towing capabilities. It's presented with two superb powertrains and a good variety of configurations, which means the heavy-duty ute can always get the job done. But, it has more to offer than just workhorse capabilities. It has a plush and spacious cabin with plenty of creature comforts and conveniences, particularly in top-spec Limited form. However, it doesn't come with the best selection of driver aids and safety features, nor does it have the best safety rating - the NHTSA's review of the 2021 Ram 2500 returned disappointing results, but it's one of the most dependable trucks on the road nonetheless. When all is said and done, the 2500 has a lot going for it and is well worth considering alongside its top-selling contenders in the US.

What Ram 2500 Model Should I Buy?

If you're just looking for an authoritative and luxurious large pickup truck, the Laramie configured with the default Crew Cab and 6'4" cargo box is the version to go for. It comes standard with a more desirable selection of creature comforts and conveniences over the lower-spec models, including LED exterior lighting, an 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, and the inclusion of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Both front seats in the Lamarie are also upgraded with heating and ten-way power adjustability. If all you care about hauling big loads, then the base-level Tradesman equipped with the turbodiesel engine and 4x2 drivetrain should more than suffice. However, the 4x4 might appeal to you if you need to take those loads off the beaten path. The Lamarie trim of the 2021 RAM 2500 pickup truck bears a price of $50,840 before you start opting for extras.
