Best Sedans for Families of 2020

Despite the growing popularity of SUVs, many shoppers still look to other segments for new purchases; for those with children, this often means perusing the roster of best family sedans. While these traditional three-box cars may not be as eminently practical, they still hold a lot of appeal as the best sedan for your family, so the market remains quite competitive.

To meet the needs of a family, be it just starting or well on its way to a third or fourth child, sedans need to work pretty hard to remain relevant. Space is always a primary concern, with tight rear seats leading to whining teenagers. Similarly, small trunks just do not cut it in the modern market where crossovers are able to offer in excess of 20 cubic feet. But one of the most important aspects that modern manufacturers need to consider is safety. A rearview camera alone is no longer sufficient. We have extensively researched every 4-door sedan available in the US to help you make an informed decision when looking to buy a new family vehicle. Whether you want a reliable four-door model or a sporty 2-door, we’ve undoubtedly seen it, rated it, and compared it to make your life a little easier.

What to consider when buying

In the past, we did not have all that many options when buying a vehicle. Today, we have hatchbacks, SUVs, trucks, and even minivans. So it is only natural to wonder if an old-school three-box car is actually the right choice. Looking at the strengths and weaknesses of the segment definitely cannot hurt.

Pros

  • They’re more maneuverable than larger crossovers
  • Generally speaking, sedans are more engaging drivers
  • Better overall fuel economy
  • More affordable in their budget-friendly guises

Cons

  • Nowhere near as practical as similarly sized SUVs
  • Do not always offer the best visibility
  • No matter how hard you try, you’ll never fit more than five passengers

Which Family Sedan stands out?

Since there is quite a bit of overlap within the sedan segment, not every model in our top rankings for 2020 is actually all that suitable for domestic consumption.

  • Porsche Taycan: This is our top-rated sedan, so it is no surprise that it scores well here, too. However, it is cramped rear seats and tiny trunk mean that it just cannot get all the daily errands done. Your gangly teens probably will not complain about being squeezed in the back, though. With 483 horsepower on tap courtesy of its refined electric powertrain, the Taycan is certainly one of the fastest cars on our list. And, while it may bear a pretty hefty $100k price tag, the impressive electric mileage figures help to offset that a bit.
  • BMW 8 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class: Still within the more luxurious spectrum of the market, the Germans are both excellent people haulers. They each have plenty of space within their cabins, and their trunks are actually relatively functioning. The Merc has the smaller of the two, with 12.3 cubic feet on offer. But, thanks to their potent engine line-ups, both machines are excellent performers, and their road comfort and safety features are second to none, making these some of the safest vehicles available.
  • Toyota Avalon: If your budget is too tight to consider one of these more premium options, you’ll also find more affordable options like this on our list. Available with a standard combustion engine or hybrid set-up, the Avalon boasts impressive mileage figures, especially in hybrid form. The interior is quite spacious, too, if not quite so opulently appointed, and the 16.1-cubic-foot trunk is highly practical. The Avalon also rates high for safety and won the 2019 Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS.

FAQs

What is the best family sedan car?

In terms of BuzzScore, the Porsche Taycan takes top marks, but it is quite expensive and not overly practical. If you can afford it, a large luxury cruiser like the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe or Mercedes-Benz S-Class will not steer you wrong. The Dodge Charger or Chevrolet Impala are more inexpensive options if you still want a pit of power under your hood.

What is the most affordable family sedan?

There are a number of extremely popular, cheaper models on the market. They do not score as impressively as some of the names we’ve mentioned, but the Honda Accord, Mazda 6, Toyota Camry, and Nissan Altima are all respectable vehicles that cost less than $30k. Alternatively, you could look at an older model from 2019, 2018, or even 2017, assuming you do not mind sacrificing some of the more modern features.
