2024 Subaru Legacy Review: Good But Forgettable

While the Subaru Legacy is a good vehicle when looked at in isolation, it's also a rather forgettable sedan that fades into the background alongside the better-known Impreza and BRZ. And, if it's not overshadowed by its siblings, then the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord definitely leave it in the dust. The Legacy has a choice of two engines, with the most potent of the two being a competent turbocharged boxer that makes 260 horsepower, and the brand's acclaimed all-wheel-drive system is standard on every model. It's also remarkably cheap, though that isn't particularly uncommon in the segment. Still, with little to no changes, it seems the 2024 Legacy is destined to lose even more market share to its better-rounded rivals.

What's the Price of the 2024 Subaru Legacy?

The price of a new Subaru Legacy is one of the only things keeping it in the running. Starting us off is the Base at $24,895, while the Premium remains under $30k at $27,195. From there, the price climbs with the $31,945 Limited and the $34,495 Sport. At the upper end of the range is the Touring XT, which will cost you $38,195. These are the MSRP prices of the Subaru Legacy and do not include any administrative fees or the $1,090 destination charge.

2024 Subaru Legacy Handling and Driving Impressions

The 2024 Legacy is meant to be easy to drive, but not necessarily fun. The result is an experience that won't be memorable, although it will easily become second nature. This is to say that it is neither good nor bad. The road grip is satisfactory, but it doesn't inspire the confidence to be too adventurous, and while steering is responsive, feedback is lacking. The suspension is definitely tuned more toward comfort than handling in any athletic fashion, and it can even take on some uneven terrain thanks to the torque-vectoring AWD system. If you want a slightly more athletic driving experience, the Sport trim swaps out the standard suspension for a more dynamic one. Luckily, it also comes with the more powerful engine that can actually deliver a thrill or two, unlike the lackluster four-pot. Wind and road noise can be a little problematic at high speeds, but the overall build quality is good enough to dampen the worst of it.

Verdict: Is The 2024 Subaru Legacy A Good car?

There isn't anything egregiously wrong with the 2023 Subaru Legacy. It's a perfectly adequate car, but there are better options in the USA. The Subaru has a depressingly slow base engine, and you have to spend an extra $10k to get your hands on the turbocharged unit, which destroys any pricing advantages. If you can put up with the slow acceleration, you get the peace of mind of a top-notch safety rating, and the standard features aren't too bad, either. However, while AWD has its perks, it hurts the long-term fuel economy of the car, which is why the hybrid Camry and Accord can easily offer better value for money. Still, if you do live in a region prone to snow or muddy roads, there is a case to be made for the Legacy. But if these aren't legitimate concerns, your money would be better spent elsewhere.

What 2024 Subaru Legacy Model Should I Buy?

While some people may be able to settle for the base four-pot, we just can't handle going anywhere that slowly. So, in our opinion, the Sport is the best model to recommend. You still aren't paying the full price demanded by the Touring XT, but you get the more powerful turbocharged engine as well as a bunch of added tech, such as a sunroof, a heated steering wheel, and some extra safety tech. Along with all this, you get a suspension that can handle a little more adventurous driving while not compromising on comfort. It's the best all-round package for a car that doesn't really excel at anything.
