The Subaru Legacy's safety record is exemplary thanks to its many safety features, and it's among the best performers in its class in official crash tests. It received full five-star ratings for all its NHTSA crash tests and at the IIHS, it scored the top Good rating for all tests except for the updated side test, for which it was given an Acceptable rating. The IIHS also awarded it a 2023 Top Safety Pick award.
NHTSA safety ratings are not available at this time.
Every Legacy is fitted with eight airbags and the standard ABS, stability control, a backup camera, and tire-pressure monitoring. Additional to these safety features, all trims come with the EyeSight suite of driver assists, which includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and steering assist, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and lane tracing. Automatic high beams are standard on all trims too. From Limited and up, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic reverse braking are added (these are optional on the Premium), and from Sport level and up, driver-alertness monitoring is standard too (and optional on the Limited). Only the Touring XT gets a 180-degree front-view camera.

The Subaru Legacy's reliability scores are not bad, but they aren't at the top of the class either. JD Power gives it an overall rating of 80 out of 100, but the score of 78 for quality and reliability is decidedly average. At least recalls are few and far between, with none for 2022 or 2023 at the time of writing. The last time a Legacy was recalled, it was the 2021 model for an improperly secured timing chain that may cause an engine stall.
The limited warranty on the Subaru Legacy covers it for three years/36,000 miles, while the powertrain warranty is valid for five years/60,000 miles. There are also a three-year/36,000-mile wear-item warranty and a five-year/unlimited mileage warranty against rust perforation.
The Subaru Legacy comes as standard with a comprehensive suite of driver assists; it also received five-star NHTSA crash-test scores and a 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick award, so it's very safe.
The Legacy has eight airbags. Each front passenger gets front and side airbags, the driver gets a knee airbag, the front passenger gets a seat-cushion-mounted airbag, and both rows' outboard passengers are covered by full-length curtain airbags.
