2023 Toyota Camry Review: The Middle Management Champion

The Toyota Camry, now in its eighth generation, is the king of midsize sedans and has ruled the sales charts for family sedans for the past few decades. However, it has slowly been usurped by crossovers like the Honda HR-V and its distant sibling, the Toyota RAV4. Despite declining sales figures in the sedan market, Toyota continues to pump money and development time into the Camry, and the 2023 car is the best yet. The Camry is offered with a range of powertrains, including a highly efficient hybrid and a punchy 301-horsepower V6 engine. It does battle with other class classics such as the Honda Accord, and also has to see off newer rivals like the Kia K5. The Honda and Kia do some things better than the Camry, but the Toyota's spread of abilities has helped it attract the most buyers. With legendary build quality, reliability, lots of safety features, and an available V6, our review of the Toyota Camry shows why it remains one of the top choices in this class.

What's the Price of the 2023 Toyota Camry?

When jumping between lower models, the Toyota Camry's prices only increase incrementally, but if you're shopping on the higher level, be prepared to fork out some extra cash. The base-level LE has an MSRP of $25,945, and if you fancy adding AWD to the latter, it'll cost an extra $1,400. An SE model will cost $27,485, while the special SE Nightshade Edition has a sticker price of $28,485. The XLE increases its asking price to $30,695. The XSE has an MSRP of $31,245 and opting for the sporty TRD will cost you $33,010. An XLE equipped with the V6 engine bears a $35,820 price tag, and the top of the range XSE V6 has a final asking price of $36,370.

We review the Camry Hybrid separately, but if that's the model you want it costs $28,080 for the LE Hybrid, $29,615 for the SE Hybrid, $30,615 for the SE Hybrid Nightshade, $32,970 for the XLE Hybrid, and $33,520 for the XSE Hybrid.

All prices exclude the $1,095 destination fee.

2023 Toyota Camry Handling And Driving Impressions

The Camry has never stood out as a sharp handling machine, but the eighth-generation model is better than ever. The Camry's chassis and suspension setup feels taught without being overly stiff and eliminates the body roll so common in older models. City driving is a comfortable experience, and while the 2023 Toyota Camry excels at highway cruising, we found that road noise could get intrusive. For those that want to get to the accountant's expo in a hurry, Toyota offers a TRD model that adds a number of chassis improvements for a sharper driving experience. Although it doesn't feel remotely sporty, the Camry has well-weighted steering and handles with enough composure for a sedan of this kind.

With 301 horsepower going to the front wheels via a strong naturally-aspirated V6 engine, the front wheels can get overwhelmed, but the V6 Camry still feels fast, and its eight-speed automatic transmission is perfectly matched to this strong motor. All-wheel drive is available as an option, and although the base engine lacks some vigor, it is the more economical mill.

Verdict: Is The 2023 Toyota Camry A Good Car?

The new Toyota Camry sedan continues to excel at being precisely the car that people need, rather than the object of desire that so many want. That's why it is still the best-selling sedan in the USA. The 2023 model doesn't mix things up a whole lot but continues to deliver the traditional Camry promises of reliability, comfort, and value for money. We love that there's something for everyone here: the base model is a budget-friendly family car with an excellent safety record, while the hybrid offers incredible fuel economy. The TRD is surprisingly rapid, and they all feature impeccable reliability. We just wish the base model didn't feel as cheap inside and that the Camry was a little quieter at speed. There's also a good chance that Toyota Camry competitors like the all-new Honda Accord will steal some customers from Toyota. But despite its few weaknesses, the Camry looks set to rule the sales charts for at least another year or two.

What 2023 Toyota Camry Model Should I Buy?

If you are still buying sedans, it's likely because they offer more fun than the average crossover can provide. For this type of shopper, we highly recommend the Camry TRD, which rings in as the least-expensive option with a V6 engine. The TRD skimps on a few safety and luxury features like blind-spot monitoring or a sunroof, but makes up for these shortcomings with handling improvements, a cat-back exhaust, and sporty appearance package. It is by far the coolest of the Camry models, and at just over $33,000, it is the best value.
