2023 GR Corolla Interior

The interior of the Toyota GR Corolla will be familiar to Corolla drivers, but that's no bad thing. The basics are already sound, with a stylish design, soft-touch materials, and a feeling of solidity. Toyota has made an effort to jazz the GR Corolla up on the inside with sports seats and pedals and racier trim and materials. The theme is much darker, with blacks and dark grays dominating, and the equipment level reflects its flagship status. The bottom two trims are five-seaters, but the Morizo Edition deletes the rear seat, rear speakers, and rear window regulators, saving nearly 100 lbs. It gets even sportier front semi-bucket seats complete with holes for a racing harness, along with another few racy touches, such as the red straight-ahead marker on the steering wheel.

Seating and Interior Space

The Core and Circuit Edition have seating for five occupants - in theory. In practice, the rear seats of the Toyota GR Corolla are not really spacious enough for three full-size adults. The headroom of 37.6 inches back there is adequate, but the 29.9-inch legroom is not - that's 7.5 inches short of what you'll find in a Civic Type R, so interior space is not a strong suit. At least the rear seats are easy to get into through proper full-size rear doors, unlike the Veloster N's one-rear-door setup. The Corolla hatch is very much a front-passenger car with a generous 42 inches of legroom and 38.4 inches of headroom on offer up front.

Thanks to superb sports seats, front occupants are held securely during energetic cornering, and the bolstering offers far more lateral support than the seats in a normal Corolla. The driver's seat is six-way manually adjustable and the passenger gets four-way adjustment.

The Morizo Edition solves the rear-seat-space problem by removing the seats altogether, turning this trim into a two-seater. Its front seats are semi-bucket sports seats that are prepped to fit a racing harness.

Interior Colors and Materials

There isn't much choice when it comes to interior colors for the GR Corolla, with only one color scheme for each. The Core trim has black cloth upholstery with gray stitching and GR headrest badges; satin-silver finishing is retained on the door pulls and releases, around the air vents, and on other items such as the horizontal dashboard trim strip. The steering wheel is trimmed in leather.

The Circuit Edition's seats are covered in a combination of Brin Naub suede and leatherette, with red mesh inserts and red stitching, the latter also extending to items such as the steering wheel, gearshift gaiter, and handbrake lever. It also gets a leather Morizo signature shift knob. The Morizo Edition gets completely blacked-out interior trim, and essentially everything that's satin silver on the base trims is black here. While it gets the same upholstery and stitching as the Circuit Edition, it's applied to semi-bucket racing-style seats. Its interior is also different from the others by virtue of the red straight-ahead sightline marker at the top of an ultrasuede-trimmed steering wheel, an Alcantara Morizo signature shift knob, and red seatbelts.

2023 GR Corolla Trunk and Cargo Space

The Toyota GR Corolla's trunk space behind the second row is 17.8 cubic feet, which is more than you'll find in an equivalent sedan, but less than a Golf R's 19.9 cubes and a lot worse than the super-practical Civic Type R's 24.5 cubes. The Morizo Edition might be the sportiest, but it also has a far larger trunk volume of 36.6 cu-ft at the expense of a rear seat. Toyota says this space is ideal for accommodating two spare wheels on racing days.

Interior stowage options are not as varied, and the GR inherits this flaw from the normal Corolla. It's not bad, but the small glove compartment is an irritant. At least there are average-sized door bins, a center-console bin beneath the armrest lid, and a tray ahead of the center console. The front passengers get twin cupholders in the center console next to the handbrake, and the two rear cupholders are high up at the front end of the door armrests.

2023 GR Corolla Infotainment and Features

Features

Standard equipment is generous and although the Core misses out on quite a lot of kit fitted to the higher trims, it comes with a respectable number of features nonetheless. Standard items include automatic headlights, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, aluminum sports pedals, keyless entry and push-button start, automatic climate control, two USB charging ports, a backup camera, a four-mode drive-mode selector (including a customizable one), and the contents of the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite. The safety system is comprised of pedestrian detection, lane-keep assistance, adaptive cruise control, and road-sign recognition. As you progress through the trims, more items are added, such as upgraded upholstery and seats, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and a wireless charging pad.

Infotainment

All GR Corollas get an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM with a three-month Platinum Plan trial, a one-year Remote Connect trial subscription that allows you to interact with the car via your smartphone, a Wi-Fi hotspot with a 30-day/3-GB trial subscription, and two USB charge ports. The audio system is different on all three trims, with the Core getting a six-speaker setup, the Circuit Edition an eight-speaker JBL setup (optional on the Core), and the Morizo Edition a two-speaker system, with the rear speakers disappearing along with the rear seat. Optional is a Drive Connect subscription that enables cloud navigation, Google Points of Interest, and the Hey, Toyota assistant; a one-year trial subscription is included on the top two trims.
