2023 Prius Prime Performance

A car that has marketed itself for years as the king of economy has no business being speedy. This remains true even after the Toyota Prius Prime got an engine upgrade that now sees it delivering 220 horsepower to the front-wheel drivetrain. This means that it is quicker than ever before, and even more so than sportier sedans like the Honda Civic Si or Subaru Impreza, going from 0-60 mph in just 6.4 seconds, according to independent tests. The previous Toyota Prius Prime had a 0-60 time of around ten seconds, so the new one represents a vast improvement. It can also hit a respectable top speed of 115 mph. The best thing about all this is that the Prius Prime still gets impressive gas mileage. Now, you can finally pass by the slower cars on the highway and not have to feel guilty about it when you finally pull up to the gas station.

Engine and Transmission

The new powertrain consists of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, developing 150 hp and 139 lb-ft of torque, paired with an electric motor and a 13.6-kWh battery that makes a combined 220 hp. This is a significant boost in power over the last generation, which made a middling 121 hp. Now, it can finally accelerate with a bit of electric gusto. This is true even with an electric continuously variable transmission sending outputs to the front wheels only. Toyota seems to have refined this often cumbersome technology to be smoother and more innocuous than most eCVTs that drone when you try to hustle the economical vehicle. For the moment, only FWD is offered, though we hope the automaker may add AWD as an option at some point.

2023 Prius Prime Gas Mileage

The Prius has always been the benchmark for fuel economy, at least as far as gas or hybrid vehicles are concerned. The new generation has a bit more oomph than before, and while this is extremely welcome, we can't help but notice the slight drop in mileage figures in the Toyota Prius Prime. The base model is still slightly more efficient than the rest of the lineup, and the Prius Prime SE has been rated at 53/51/52 mpg across the city/highway/combined cycles, or 127 MPGe when the motors are in use. The remaining trims dip down to 50/47/48 mpg or 114 MPGe. The battery has a capacity of 13.6 kWh and is good for around 44 miles of all-electric driving, while the fuel capacity of the tank is just 10.6 gallons. This means that the SE can manage a little shy of 600 miles between refills and recharges, while the upper trims get around 550 miles. It takes around 11 hours to recharge the battery using a standard household outlet, or four hours ar 240V.
