The 2021 Volkswagen Golf GTI bows out gracefully this year. Although it has begun to date in some aspects, the fundamentals remain top-notch. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 228 hp and 258 lb-ft provides spirited performance whether it is paired with the six-speed manual or the DSG gearbox. It handles brilliantly and yet is refined enough for the daily commute.
The entry-level S is well-equipped with LED daytime running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, cloth upholstery with retro Clark Plaid inserts, heated front seats, and a 6.5-inch color touchscreen. Progressing to the mid-range SE adds a larger eight-inch touchscreen display with navigation along with leather upholstery, keyless access with push-button start, and a cornering function for the LED fog lights. Finally, the Autobahn gets added safety kit like adaptive cruise control and park distance control. This range-topper also boasts a 12-way power driver's seat and a Fender premium sound system.
Although comprehensive packages are missing, you can upgrade the GTI with a few basics like a cargo box attachment for $699, a bike holder attachment, or various other wheel designs that range in price. The GTI is very much a case of what you see is what you get - fortunately, what you get is still one of the most balanced offerings in the segment.
